Jonathan Fields and Vicki Shemin represented me for a simple divorce. It was a short-term marriage with no children. No discovery was done and we only appeared in Court twice, once for a motion hearing and again to present a full settlement agreement. The emergency motion was filed by my ex-husband and only necessary due to Attorney Shemim’s advice for me to change the locks to our former marital home. This was an action I wouldn’t have taken otherwise, ultimately escalated the amount of animosity in the case and the judge disapprovingly viewed as a form of self-help. Somehow this all amounted to attorney’s fees exceeding $82,000, the last $19,000 or so I am being repeatedly hounded for while several requests to discuss my billing continue to be ignored. Their paralegal has an hourly rate comparable to what many firms charge for a mid-level associate, and over billed for simple administrative tasks (i.e. two hours to divide the numbers on my biweekly paycheck in half). This was not a high-net worth case, there were no unusual or extraordinary issues to be dealt with, and the total amount billed for a matter that was resolved in less than a year actually exceeded the amount I received as a settlement. I would have ended up in a better position financially if I didn’t have counsel at all. I ended up negotiating the final terms of the settlement directly with my ex anyway. Perhaps this firm is great for those who are extremely wealthy where the total amount of legal fees is of no concern, but for anyone like myself, making a living as an RN, expect to pay top-notch prices while consistently being treated as a low-priority client. There are certainly better options out there.

Jon Fields is an excellent divorce/family law attorney you can hire to help you with your divorce process. I came to Jon Fields and his college Vicki Shemin after becoming frustrated with the direction my divorce was taken. From the moment I hired the Law Offices of Jon Fields I felt at ease. I was impressed by intelligence, law knowledge, excellent legal expertise, strategic thinking and good judgment of these attorneys. In a week they had a deep understanding of my case, came up with effective strategies which eventually led to the best possible result of the case. Everyone in the Law Offices of Jon Fields was very helpful, organized, and professional. Throughout the divorce process, they fully informed me of what was going on with the case, explained everything completely and thoroughly. The office team demonstrated excellence in communications. My phone calls were always returned right away, emails responses were returned on the same day, often in 10-20 min. All Jon’s presentations in the court were excellent. He was confident, well-prepared, professional and extremely effective. He never over-promised and always delivered outstanding result. I am very helpful to John to navigate a very difficult time in my life. I would highly recommend Jon Fields and his team to anyone in need of a family law attorney. Irene T.

I was very pleased that I chose Jonathan Fields to represent me in my divorce proceedings. He and his paralegal put me at ease right from the start and were extremely responsive to my needs, both during and after the divorce. I felt completely confident in Jon's knowledge and abilities. He helped me navigate the very complex field of divorce and did a great job representing my interests and enabling us to resolve most of our issues before we got to court.

I highly recommend Maria Vijil Davis. She handled the legal work for both the sale of our existing home and the purchase of our new home. While she certainly handled the legal matters with aplomb, her unique value add comes from her communication and people skills which were likely honed by her extensive and diverse background in a range of fields. I have found these to be rare skills among professional service providers. Any attorney can do your legal work, few can do it in a manner that makes the process and documents approachable and easy to understand. I highly recommend Maria and would certainly work with her again.

Maria helped me set up my limited liability company and negotiated my operating agreement. She was incredibly easy to work with and extremely responsive to all my questions. Since she speaks spanish, she was able to help me with some of my spanish-speaking clients. I also used Maria to negotiate my commercial lease. I recommend her highly to anyone in need of a business or real estate attorney.

Deborah was wonderful! From the consultation call all the way through to the final judgement, Deborah was responsive and on top of all the intricacies needed for my case. Deborah’s sound legal advice saved a ton of unnecessary procedural headaches and got us to the finish line quickly. I highly recommend using the Katz Legal group and will do so again in the future.

As you can imagine, the legal matter comes with a huge frustration, a lot of stress and lots of unpleasant time. Sometimes, well most of the time, when we end up in this situation, we can be extremely rude and inpatient. Well, when it comes to hire someone to deal with your problems a lot of times lawyers just saying "ohh, well, don't be a silly jerk just sign it" however this approach is NOT acceptable, it is all about your life in a long time. I have been in that situation but i was lucky enough to find Deborah who isn't just helped me but also explained to me in very fine details all the implication of making one or other decision moving forward, she was so patient with me and helped me to make educated decision and not just a "whatever" approach. I'm so grateful that i have had such lawyer who helped me to deal with a craziness of our laws and next to nothing protection of me as a citizen. To conclude, if you are looking for a solution in your life, long term solution so Deborah A. Katz is your answer and great help. I would recommend her not just a 100% but 200% or even more.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Wellesley, Massachusetts?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
