Pros

“Heather is a dedicated and caring attorney that will advocate for you in a zealous manner.”
2
Responsive and attentive communication
“Sean was excellent at clarifying any questions and sending follow up emails. You aren't just a number to them- they treat their clients with compassion and respect.”
3
Compassionate and understanding approach
“Attorney O'Connor is extremely knowledgeable and cares about her clients. It is hard to find an attorney who will give you the empathetic hand that she provides.”
4
Successful outcomes for clients
“With her perseverance and knowledge, we were able to get the judgment in our favor.”
5
Broad expertise in family law matters
“Heather has helped many people that I have referred to her office. They have spoken very highly of her ability to explain the court process and stand up for their interests at court.”
Cons
1
Inconsistent communication and poor client management
“I had nearly given up advocating for myself regarding a transfer of assets that my ex spouse was refusing to cooperate with. Lydia took the time to listen to me, and take the burden off my shoulders.”
2
Unexpectedly high costs and billing practices
“They took $5,000 from me, just got papers mailed from RI to Mass and dropped me as a client without a courtdate!! They told me they could help with my custody case and I could trust them, Lies!!!”
3
Lack of responsiveness and follow-through
“I waited and waited and finally it was getting close to the pretrial, so I called to find out what was going on if anything had been prepared for my case. Low and behold, I get a call from the intake person claiming she forgot to forward my case to the Lawyer and that it was still in her inbox.”
4
Difficulty obtaining refunds or retrieving records
“I wrote a letter terminating their services, just to be told they would not refund my balance until I got a new lawyer to drop the new hearing and they would not release my records to take to a new firm.”
5
Potential bias or discrimination concerns
“I don't know if this is because I am a minority, I would hate to think this, but I feel I did not get the representation I deserved nor the response that they should've given after the situation.”

We had the pleasure of working with Michael Robins for both notary services and as the closing attorney for two investment properties. From start to finish, Michael demonstrated an impressive level of professionalism, expertise, and attention to detail, making the entire process smooth and stress-free. As our buyer’s attorney, Michael went above and beyond by identifying a mis-disclosed issue that could have become a major concern. He skillfully negotiated with the seller within a very tight timeframe, ensuring our interests were well-protected. Throughout the process, he took the time to clearly explain each step, providing invaluable feedback on the risks and benefits of various actions we could take. We always felt fully informed and confident in my decisions thanks to his thorough guidance. As we continue to explore more home opportunities, We’ll undoubtedly be reaching out to Michael again for future transactions. Knowing we can count on his expertise and thorough guidance gives me confidence in moving forward, and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to anyone looking for a knowledgeable and reliable real estate attorney.

Katie is handling a real estate transaction for my wife and I. Turns out the sellers have missed on getting permits signed after work was done and a compliance form through the town of Shrewsbury. I would highly reccomend her. She is highly knowledgeable on this area and have had nothing but trust within the whole process. She looks at everything. Im a contractor and some of them I had missed. This is why she does what she does and i do what i do. A big thank you to Katie.......

I hired Attorney Nicole D. Sullivan in 2016 after suffering damage to my C-spine in a fall at work which required 3 discs to be fused with rods and screws to stabilize the vertebrae. In the same fall I was knocked out which caused a concussion and damaged both hips which were totally replaced in coming years. I was forced to retired early and my employer tried to deny my injuries were work related even though they sent me to Lawrence General Hospital via ambulance. They even refused to pay the ambulance cost until Attorney Sullivan pushed the issue. I am now receiving an Accidental Disability Retirement benefit that started in January of 2023. It was a long road with many medical procedures and Attorney Sullivan made sure I was paid and all medical bills paid! I will never be pain free but, my quality of life is better thanks to the offers of Attorney Sullivan and her associates. Highly recommended for workers comp issues!

We called Todd after we paid another attorney initial amount because I needed someone who can be trusted. Todd immediately won our trust and was completely selfless in providing us with the information that helped us with a comprehensive planning. He is honest and helpful with no-sales approach but focused on what his clients need. Thank you Todd for your help with the process.

Mr Rosenfield made me feel extremely comfortable explaining every detail of the trust and always made room for questions. Can be frightening as a widow to handle this alone. One or two in person meetings option for zoom and constant email connections with updates.

This attorney called me and gave me almost 20 minutes of free advice on what to do with my pet insurance claim denial. I consider that a green flag!

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Westborough, Massachusetts?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
