I used Ms Haspel for a divorce case. Before I selected her and gave her a retainer, she was very optimistic about the potential outcome of a financial settlement, but once she had my retainer, she became very pessimistic and rejected any ideas I had about getting more than the worst case scenario she painted about what a judge would award me. They r a cookie cutter firm. U could do it yourself better. My exhusband’s attorney was FAR better than she was; she was outplayed at every point. When ever my ex asked for something, my question was ‘why should I do that?’ and her response was always why not? It was almost as if she worked for my ex and not me. When I told her the replacement cost for something my ex wanted, she refused to believe me. My ex and his attorney sent many ‘flame’ emails and she would just forward them to me. If she responded at all to the other attorney, it was in a very weak way. When I challenged her on this, she said their emails meant nothing as you ‘can’t litigate by email’ and she thought they were just trying )and succeeding) I in tormenting me. I had info about my ex that she said was useless as a judge wouldn’t consider it his decision. However, I thought she could use the info in any negotiation as my ex didn’t want this info to b known to our children or his family and friends. She did nothing. She kept trying to scare me with horror stories about women who ended up screwed by judges. She wanted to just wrap things up quickly (even though I was in no hurry) and agree to whatever they wanted and I should b happy just to get rid of him. I ended up using a mediator and advocating for myself and getting way more than she said I should get. Unless u want a quick divorce and r willing to give u everything to get it, find another attorney.

I hired this firm for my divorce/custody case. I was given terrible advice (I was told I could only get full custody of my 2 children in the fall if I asked for 40% in the summer. This turned out to be awful advice and I'm now having to start from scratch with another lawyer. I was double charged for a second attorney who never said a word in court. 15K was blown through in 3 months. Mine and my children's lives are in complete chaos because of this firm. I highly discourage anyone in a family law matter from retaining anyone from this firm.

This firm does not listen to their clients. They charge outrageous fees. I lost my house because of this firm and their lackluster performance. They are a cookie-cutter firm so don't expect too much except a big bill.

I asked to hire her for my divorce case because of her decades of experience, but she said that she worked as a "team" with an inexperienced, junior lawyer (yet who charged almost as much as her - $300/hr vs. $375/hr), claiming that I would be getting 2 lawyers without being "double-charged". Subsequently, however, I seldom heard from her again, and she generally ignored my e-mailed questions unless I asked the other lawyer to talk to her about them. Only the junior lawyer handled my case. At one point, when I arranged a meeting with her and asked her point-blank if she would at least be present for court appearances, she wouldn't even commit to that. To add grievous insult to injury, the junior lawyer wasn't at all responsive to me, so I asked Linda to represent me solely, but she refused, and instead angrily rejected my legitimate criticism of her associate.

Attorney Barraco is a true professional. From the moment we first spoke, she put me at ease, with her calm and professional demeanor. Having never met before we discussed my needs and within a few days we met for the first time. When we met she was kind, welcoming, and to the point. I enjoyed her ability to weed through the nonsense and get down to business. Throughout the process she was just a phone call or email away. She returns messages in any form very quickly and with great tact. While Attorney Barraco represented me her knowledge of the law and preparation for the case came to light throughout the process. I had full confidence from day one and she did not disappoint at the conclusion. I HIGHLY recommend her to anyone looking for representation.

My case started in 2017 and mostly just ended in my mind yesterday. Laurel was there every step of the way. Not only that, I had the entire firm assisting me whenever it was needed. This was a very ugly case. We went up against multiple lawyers. With many issues that needed to be tackled. She kept her cool, while I being emotionally attached needed her guidance to not let it get the best of me. Not that I will ever consider marrying again, although she told me to never say never. (She tells me she has divorced multiple people, multiple times) I will do my best to never make this mistake again. What I know from this hell that I went thru, is I would never have come thru it as well as I did without her knowledge and support of her team of well educated people. So if you are going through a divorce I would highly recommend using Laurel as your lawyer. She will stand by you from beginning to end! Thank you Laurel for your support and guidance. Goog or bad, I will always remember our days in court together.

Mr Rosenfield made me feel extremely comfortable explaining every detail of the trust and always made room for questions. Can be frightening as a widow to handle this alone. One or two in person meetings option for zoom and constant email connections with updates.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Westborough, Massachusetts?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
