Gerard was a pleasure to work with. He was responsive to every call and email, completed every task efficiently, and patiently described all parts of the process. He provided advice that was balanced, useful, and individualized. I'd happily work with him (and his excellent team) again and will certainly recommend him to others.

I could not have asked for more from Gerard; he and his team were quick, and responsive, and made the closing process genuinely the smoothest and easiest I've ever experienced!

From beginning to end, our experience working with Steve on our condo purchase was outstanding- responsive at each phase of the purchase; looking out for our best interests in negotiations; a trustworthy, deeply experienced attorney with a professional and very friendly demeanor.

I had chance working with Steve multiple times on my mortgage refinance and new property purchases. He is very experienced and always provides educational and informative explanations throughout the entire process. This becomes a tremendous differentiator as I compare between my experience with Steve vs. other attorneys that I worked with in past. I will definitely recommend Steve to anyone I know who have needs for his professional services!

We recently hired Stephen Fernandes to represent us in the purchase and sale of our home and we instantly felt he had our best interest at hand. When something out of the ordinary came up, he really went to bat for us, ensuring our protection. During the closing, his experience is evident, as he takes time to explain everything in a way that is easy to understand. He is down to earth and very easy to deal with. I am grateful to Stephen for his guidance throughout this process, he really knows his stuff. I would highly recommend him to anyone and hire him again, without hesitation.

David Baker was excellent for all legal matters of this civil case involving intimidation and harrassment. Over the months he advised on factual and evidentiary needs to comply with the law. David was especially great on pre trial research, strategy, court, ethics, jury selection, negotiation. He had the respect of plaintiffs, the judge, jury and defendents' counsel. The jury decision was fair and the judge ruled for permanent injunction with damages. We highly recommend David M. Baker Law.

David Baker was so incredibly helpful and supportive to me. I have never dealt with the court system in any capacity and was frankly, terrified. He made the entire process much more comfortable. Having David fighting for me really put my mind at ease. I truly feel like I was in the best possible hands and could not be more grateful for how professional and supportive he was every step of the way. David made sure I was safe and protected physically, mentally, and emotionally throughout the whole experience and I highly recommend him to anyone who needs a strong, smart, professional, and capable lawyer.

Attorney David Baker was hired based on a recommendation from the law office of Latham and Latham, a trusted firm who could not represent us due to my case. I took the time to look up Attorney Baker, meet with him, discuss the case. I found him to be sincere and frank as well as empathetic when sharing his legal point of view in a heartfelt manner. This was important as it involved family. In representing us, he did his best to resolve the issue and not go to court. We went to court and won on all three of the counts. His preparation and delivery was exceptional especially on his final statement. My recommendation is of highest regards, as a person, as an attorney!

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Winchester, Massachusetts?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
