I am writing to give my highest recommendation and endorsement of Mr. Peter C. Clark, of Ferguson, Widmayer and Clark, PC of Ann Arbor, MI, an outstanding estate attorney. I am a long-term (over 40 years) faculty member from the University of Michigan. My husband and I recently began work on our wills, powers of attorney for health care and on setting up a family trust. We received a very strong recommendation from trusted close friends and colleagues who referred us to Pete, who had been so helpful to them in the same process. What we have come to value most about Pete—besides his immense fund of common sense, his low-key expertise, user-friendliness, professionalism and thoughtful concern for his clients’ needs is his sense of humour—by which I really mean a sense of balance, his ability to help in a timely way—and, most of all, his deep integrity. Beyond the outstanding technical legal work from Pete and his team at FW&C, Pete puts a lot of expertise, thought and most importantly—heart- into what he does for clients. He has put a very personable human and humane face on a process that can be (in the wrong hands), intimidating and scary. In a relatively short time, Pete has made a positive difference for us, and has made our lives so much easier by alleviating many of our concerns over future (inevitable) issues, that we feel encouraged and a sense of calm for the first time in years. Both our family trust issues and health issues are complex and multifaceted. Pete is immensely capable as well as able to provide solutions and to explain these complex issues and reduce them to manageable and understandable plans of action. I am immensely grateful to my colleagues and friends for this referral. I come from a family of academic and government lawyers with a lot of expertise and enormous experience. Peter Clark is in every way comparable to my family members. He is first class and someone I trust and admire greatly.

Pete was extremely helpful in preparing all the paperwork we needed. We asked him to create a trust in the event that my husband and I died at the same time as we have an infant daughter. He guided us through the whole process, taking his time to ensure that we understood everything and were comfortable. I did not know much about trusts when we started, and Pete was excellent at presenting all the information clearly and providing examples for me. He asked us questions that I did not know to ask, or had not considered, to ensure that we had a thorough document that would cover many contingencies. Pete was very professional, friendly, and sensitive to our needs. We greatly appreciated his help and will definitely work with him again. We would recommend him to anyone who would like to plan for the future.

We were referred to Pete, by our financial advisor and couldn't be happier! We hired him for our estate planning, which included establishing a trust, powers of attorney & living will. His sense of urgency and professionalism was outstanding. He was also down-to-earth, making it very easy to relate with him. He has an instinctual desire to fully understand the questions we ask and is detailed in answering, in ways that we understood. He appreciated my attention to details and there was never a question that he was working in our best interest. If I wasn't 100% confident with a decision, he was excellent at talking through various scenarios and making recommendations, based on criteria I had expressed. When I knew exactly what I wanted, he took the time to also understand every detail. He has gone above and beyond in his accessibility, attention to details, answering our questions & advocating for my husband and I. We've also hired him to review real estate documentation for the purpose of purchasing a home, which further increased my confidence in his professionalism & representation.

He has helped our family on many occasions for a variety of reasons. He recently helped us create and implement our long overdue will, patient advocate designations, and trust. His attention to detail on our family's unique circumstances has helped to create a well-articulated and comprehensive plan that allows my wife and I to rest at ease if the unthinkable happens. I found him to be very professional, knowledgeable, and helpful. We will continue to use his expertise in law whenever the need arises and would highly recommend him to friends and family.

Ms. Rast is an extremely knowledgeable contract attorney who is a joy to work with. She was able to distill a 220 page federal contract our organization signed into extremely palatable sub-agreements for our diverse partners, while still retaining the critical components necessary. At all times, Ms. Rast is extremely sensitive to the needs of her clients. She provides thorough and quick turnaround on all client communications. We have worked with Ms. Rast on numerous projects in the past and will continue to do so in the future. She is extremely trustworthy and knowledgeable for all matters relevant to our needs in the environmental field.

From beginning to end Mr. Simon knew every step to take, made everything extremely clear (as complex as the law may be), and shows very clear command of the courtroom and the law. He is the person you want in your corner, 100%. I felt extremely safe in his hands and could not be happier with the outcome. Thank you thank you thank you!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Ann Arbor, Michigan?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
