Alan helped me with a long standing tax issue while working for a separate firm. I was so pleased with the results of his work to resolve the issue that when I needed additional help with a separate issue I followed him over to his new firm and again I couldn't be happier with the results

Having tax obligations and liens can be extremely stressful and emotionally exhausting. Alan was understanding and very supportive. He answered all of my many questions and was very responsive and knowledgeable. It took more time than anyone would like, but in the end he reduced my moderate 6 figure bill to just $l5K. Don’t waste your money on an Enrolled Agent first like I did. Hire an excellent attorney – Alan Shamoun.

As a small business owner, I had the misfortune of having to deal with the State of Michigan's Unemployment Insurance Administration over a ridiculous issue caused entirely by their incompetence. I went went through hell and back for more than a few years with UIA and thanks to the great work of Mr. Ayar and Mr. Shamoun, I can finally put that dark chapter of my business life to bed. The best tax law firm for regular folks, hands down.

Before meeting with Alan at AYAR Law regarding back taxes owed by my husband, our accountant told us the only way to avoid the IRS taking his entire income and a large portion of mine was to get a divorce. Even though I was not responsible for the back taxes, they take "all household income" when determining the amount someone is able to pay. I make significantly more than my husband, so his payment was almost twice what he actually makes. With 2 small children to support there was no way we could survive, so we had serious conversations about getting a divorce. Thankfully I decided I wasn’t letting the IRS destroy my marriage, so I started looking for the "best tax attorney” around. That is when I was referred to Alan, he not only was able to get the monthly payment down $1500/month, he also helped remove the tax liens. He is extremely knowledgeable and has a great reputation with IRS Revenue Officers. Alan was the calm in the middle of the storm. Highly recommend!

Due to a number of personal issues I found myself starting down the barrel of over $40,000 in tax debt and penalties. Alan Shamoum and the team at Ayer Law helped me settle my debt for PENNIES on the dollar. I am now able to move on with my life without this on my shoulders. If you are facing tax issues, call them TODAY! It will be the best investment you ever made.

I've worked with Jim on a few different different issues, and couldn't have been happier to have him on my side. When planning for a trust, he was straightforward and easy to understand, making the normally daunting process simple for us to breakdown and get our paperwork together to begin. I've also had him advise me on a few legal matters and appreciate his honesty and attention to look at the whole picture and explain it from all sides before jumping in. Nobody wants to be in the situation of needing legal advice or services, and I felt assured that Jim advised me in the direction that was best for my needs, not what was best for his pocketbook. His honesty and integrity stand out amongst other lawyers I have used in the past.

We didn’t know we were being scammed as it was all so confusing. Brian returned my call and said don’t follow their instructions regarding a new “Failure to show up in court scam” He then called the sheriff impersonator who would not give his badge number and hung up confirming the scam. What a relief we felt and Brian was so kind and helpful, and didn’t charge us anything. Thank you for being a true friend and supportive citizen.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
