My wife and I searched for several years for an Attorney to help us build our Living Trust. We went to a multitude of luncheons and were always scared away by the complexity described by the Attorneys present. A very good friend recomended that we make an appointment with an Attorney who attends the same golf outing that we do, so we knew a little about Arlyn J.Bossenbrook before hand. We were both amazed and put at ease as he explained EVERYTHING required of him and us and how the whole process would take place should we decide to create a Living Trust. He continues to help us whenever we have a question or concern as his no. 1 priority. He treated us not only as a Client but a FRIEND. Thank you Arlyn. Going through a custody battle was tough and when I needed to hire someone and a consultation, I reached out to Jasmine. She reviewed my case and gave me great legal advice. We ended up settling out of court, but due to her family law knowledge I was able to negotiate a custody order that protected my children and was fair. I would use her again for any family law matter I find myself in,

Stephen did an amazing job for our family. I am a mother of two children that are with me over 80% of the time. I had gone to court for what should have been a routine child support adjustment when I was served with a motion to change child custody. My ex-husband brought his attorney to the hearing and I felt completely intimidated. I went to court thinking the records were just going to be updated, and left with the possibility of my child being taken from me. I was horrified and cried for a few days. Once I was able to compose myself, I decided to hire a lawyer to take the matter on my behalf. I am so thankful I contacted Stephen Foucrier. He met with me on several occasions. He subpoenaed the records necessary to support our defense and filed the proper responses. His thorough work on my case led to a result better than I could have hoped for. I have my children for the same amount of time and my ex-husband now pays more than before. I don’t think that would have happened without Stephen. Unfortunately, due to the nature of my ex-husband, I will probably have to contact Stephen again. But the confidence I have in his ability to get the best results gives me the peace of mind to know everything will be fine. Thank you so much Stephen! I highly recommend you to anyone in need of a fantastic attorney.

I was referred to Colline before she went out on her own. I followed her when she opened her own practice. Best thing I did. She was always there for me. We even communicated with each other while I was out of state. She handled everything perfect. I was awarded a nice sum from my husband (which I get every month) she never backed down. I consider her a friend not just my attorney. Highly recommend her services.

Having already gone through the divorce process with a different lawyer I was left feeling taken advantaged of, underrepresented, just a dollar sign, and had a distrust in lawyers in general. Knowing that I would need representation again in the future related to custody issues I needed to find another attorney. I remembered an attorney that spoke at Second Saturday, an informational workshop for women dealing with divorce. Colline was the lawyer that spoke about the legal issues related to divorce and her passion and expertise struck me then enough for me to remembered her years later. I felt understood and safe with Colline and this was so no easy task because of my prior experience with attorneys. She took the time to understand my case and situation more than anyone had done previously. She not only has impressive knowledge with family court and custody she also understands and is sensitive to the personal aspect of your case. Colline knew when to give me straight facts, that at times was challenging to hear and also when to be empathize with me as person and mother. Her abilities to represent me in the court room were just as impressive as some of her other qualities already mentioned. She was prepared and organized with all the details of my case but what I valued even more was her passion to make sure my daughters and I had the best chance at a life without consent fear. My case was not a simple and I was consistently amazed at her drive to represent me in the best way possible. Colline was able to overcome what seemed like impossible barriers that allowed me to have the best outcome with my custody arrangement. Having Colline on my side was the only thing that allowed me to not break during the most stressful time in my life. For this reason alone I recommend her to anyone that wants an attorney that will always put forth extreme effort, has impressive knowledge and judgement with the law, and cares deeply about you as a person. You will never feel like a dollar sign when Colline is your attorney.

I almost hate to give her a good review. She's pretty busy already and I don't want to share, kidding, She's an awesome attorney, down to earth and practical and I'm not a fan of lawyers. There are a lot of slimy, dirty, money grubbin' liars, oops I mean lawyers especially in the shitshow that is family law. Colline is none of that. A true diamond in the rough.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of East Lansing, Michigan?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
