Howard is a phenomenal lawyer. He fought hard to defend me against an ex who refused to leave me alone and used the courts to harass me over several years. Howard's expertise, tenacity and knowledge of the law allowed me to prevail on each case and recoup a portion of my legal fees from my ex. I highly recommend him!

He is the worst attorney ever. Dishonest, lazy and discourteous. Hiring him was a BIG mistake. If it was possible for me to give him less than one star I would have.

I hired Mr. Wallach to assist me with an employment matter. At first I was trying to handle it by myself and was getting absolutely nowhere. Every attorney I spoke with either would not return my calls, or requested I sent them a ridiculous retainer fee. Thus, I tried to handle the case myself and was getting nowhere with the other party. Meaning nobody would even return my calls/emails! From the very first contact with Mr. Wallach he gave me confidence and advised this matter was not complicated and only asked me to send him a fraction of what the other attorneys were requesting. I appreciated that very much as I have three children and do not have a lot of money. Also, since I was being sued by my former employer they were keeping my severance pay, so really I had no money to give. Mr. Wallach assured me he could handle the case, and literally five minutes after hanging up with him I finally received communication back from my former employer. However, by then I did not have to do anything. The process was Mr. Wallach would contact me and walk me through everything, he would ask if I had any questions and what my requests were. He would then contact the other party and handle everything. He even was able to save my new job when they also received a court order from my former employer by talking with the other attorney and getting him to agree to call the HR of the new employer on my behalf! Now that is one hell of an attorney! I am forever grateful to Mr. Wallach for saving my career and my family financially for that matter. I would 1000% refer anyone needing representation over to Mr. Wallach as he is by far the most honest attorney I have ever dealt with. He even called me a week or so later, after we were done with the case, just to see how things turned out and how I was doing. I have much respect for Mr. Wallach and am forever grateful and thankful that he was the attorney to represent me. Thank you Mr. Wallach your are a rare breed, and it is appreciated very much!

I hired Howard to represent me in a civil suit back in 2013. Fortunately for me, he was able to take my case on a contingency fee agreement. He was upfront and honest with me throughout the case, and was always available to answer the numerous questions I had for him throughout the process. He was always very professional and I would recommend him to anyone who is looking for a good attorney.

Delayed the process by requesting extremely detailed information from the other party; however, did not review it and missed opportunities to question its contents. Preparation for events/court appearances was poor at best. Not recommended.

I hired miss Moise based on a referral from some very good friends. I couldn't be happier with the representation I recieved from her. I have had a few different attorneys and none have been as thorough and relentless as Erica. She represented me on a owi charge and was able to get all charges dropped as well as developing an arguement that no other attorney had entertained. Miss Moise was excellent at keeping me informed and up to date on any changes or news. Any further representation I need in the future will definitely be through miss Moise. I couldn't be more pleased. Miss Moise is very professional on every level. I would recommend her to anyone!!

She was knowlegeable and told us what we needed to know in "real" words. . . rather than getting all stuffy with legal terminalogy. What she didn't know she told us she would get back to us on. . . and then she did! I would recommend Marlayna Schoen to any of my friends and associates. - Sharon Shaw

Lisa took my case as a courtesy. I know her personally. I was charged with a misdemeanor for which the necessary elements of the crime did not match what was alleged to have happened. Lisa got the matter dismissed at the first court date; kept me in the loop the whole time, and is obviously a very capable attorney who will go far. I STRONGLY recommend Lisa.

Lisa J. Schmidt represented me in an unwarranted PPO matter. Lisa is, and was, very knowledgeable, confident and thorough in handling the particulars of this case. Her experience, understanding, dedication and expertise regarding this case, I believe, made a difference and an impact on the opposite party so much so, at the hearing, the petition was withdrawn. I highly recommend her. Her care and attention to my case was greatly appreciated.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Ferndale, Michigan?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
