Victoria Drake was the second attorney I took on. She has since represented me for the last nearly 4yrs. The office is thorough and detailed at breaking down where retainer is going. Victoria is very knowledgeable. She helps you understand the process and what to expect. She is willing to listen and is quick about communication.

I am always satisfied with my results working with Victoria Drake! She is very knowledgeable, professional, and responds in a timely manner. She helps me feel at ease through the entire process and helped us save attorney fees by reserving our case for if the threshold of burden was met. She remembers our history with our case anytime I have needed her!

From my personal experience with them, it seems to me that they do not listen to their clients. They have their own agendas, and do not care what their clients Issues are. You can always count on them to do what is best for themselves in all situations, while utilizing their clients money of course. After my experience, I left feeling like they come to conclusions before speaking to their clients. I Felt as though I constantly had to prove to them what I was saying was true before they would even listen to me. After a couple meetings, and looking around a little more thoroughly, I feel their actions and manipulations may have to do with gender issues and biases. They do not listen to their clients. They set their own agendas. They will gladly take your money though and tell you they have your back. I suggest to you, from personal experience and with best intentions, that you do not believe them. Edit: They read this review quite quickly. Perhaps it Shouldn't have been, but their reaction still shocked me a little. I received an email from them shortly after posting this, ordering me to remove my post immediately and threatening me with legal action because they did not like what I thought of my experiences with them. I definitely have lost any remaining trust in them that I may have once had, and this solidified any and all suspicions I may have had concerning them and what their self-serving intentions are.

Paul knows his stuff I am currently battling for joint physical custody of my daughter and everything is working out beautifully. The judge did not like the hours I was working so Paul says you know joint physical custody does not have to be based on how many overnights per year you have your child if you can go on 3rd shift I can get you your daughter every day of the week. Low and behold I get on third shift and the court order state that me and the mother are supposed to use each other in lieu of a third party care provider. Well needless to say beyond my daughter being in pre k 5 days a week her mother had her daycare 5 days a week so now everything is working out extremely well and I can clearly see what is going to happen. Wilnese my daughters mother is extremely mad to the point were she is breaking the court order and not using me in lieu of a 3rd party care provider so naturally the judge is mad and its looking like I'm am absolutely getting joint physical custody 50/50 so if your asking if Paul is a good attorney yea id say he is a great attorney and I would recommend him to anyone.

From the moment I first met Meghan I was put at ease. Being the defendant in an unwanted divorce was upsetting, but knowing I had Meghan on my side gave me the confidence to move forward through this difficult process. She helped me save money by allowing me to write the settlement and then reviewing it for me. She was always available by email, and the legal assistant was always available by phone, giving me easy access to information all the time. Some key things that really helped were: knowing I did not have to appear in court if nothing was contested; knowing my lawyer had my best interests in mind; knowing I was not being charged unnecessary or frivolous fees and most importantly having a female lawyer who could really understand my concerns. Nothing but the warmest regard and respect for Meghan and her firm.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Grandville, Michigan?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
