I called Kenneth after being referred by another attorney. The issue concerned breaking a lease. We spoke for several minuets. He was very helpful, even though he was giving free advice. After our conversation, I had a clear understanding of what my next steps should be. I would (and expect to) hire him to represent me.

He answered my question to the best of his ability , he needed to see the actual paperwork to given me a more accurate answer on my question. I will look into the legal documentation paperwork that was advised to do and go from there.

Kenneth's answers are the ones I read first. He is direct and to the point and knows what he is talking about. He says what needs to be said in an answer that is short and easy to understand. I have learned a lot about the practical aspects of the legal practice from Kenneth and that's why I read the AVVO questions and answers.

Mr. Zichi is thorough and very knowledgeable about every matter he has assisted me and my family with. He took the time to review my will and POA in detail with me and did not make me feel like any question I asked was a "stupid" question. In all real estate matters he has dealt with for me he has been prompt with his replies and is willing to go the extra mile to assure I'm getting the best deal possible. He is fair with his pricing and is willing to always go the extra mile for his clients. I would wholeheartedly recommend Mr. Zichi to anyone looking for legal advice.

Mike has a desire to be successful in his services and representing myself. This was first demonstrated to me when Mike did his research on me to determine if I was being honest with him in the beginning. When he was certain that he was given all the correct facts, he took on the case. I really appreciated this, because when he accepted my case, he was committed to it and to me. Mike would review every aspect with me and explain the alternatives including the potential cost impacts with the various options before proceeding. Mike dealt professionally with everything that needed to be addressed. He discussed the issues with me and listened to what I had to say without making any pre-judgments. Mike would summarize the issues well and keep to the facts even though the other party attempted to “rabbit trail” at every opportunity. My “after-divorce” problems continued for years as the other party would continually challenge the final order. Even in this, Mike dealt professionally and worked to keep my interests protected. Mike is a professional individual that is first looking for a mutual agreement in a divorce but when a mutual agreement is not obtainable, he worked aggressively for my interests. I truly give Mike my highest recommendations.

I had an ugly divorce and (1) year after the judgment was final…it got worse. I selected Mike to replace my original attorney. What a great decision! Mike stepped in and helped us through the unresolved issues and battles. He provided great legal counsel and shared wisdom that resulted in solving problems others had been unable to conclude. Since the divorce, I have worked with Mike on a couple of business matters, with the same result. I would recommend Mike to anyone needing an attorney that understands the emotions involved and will help you see your options for resolution. I will continue to work with Mike in the future and I count him as a great business associate and a member of my “legal team.”

Michael was very kind, patient and extremely helpful to us in acting as our surrogate in a real estate sale that was inherited property and had to be divided equally between 2 siblings. Since we lived in a different state and were unable to physically attend to these issues Michael was able to address all of our concerns that gave us a great deal of peace of mind. All of our sincere thanks! We couldn't have been more appreciative!

I hired Tim to help me with a driving on a suspended license charge. I was nervous that I would be charged and lose my license and be put on probation but after talking with Tim I knew I was in good hands. The day of my pretrial he called me and told me he talked to the prosecutor already and felt that we had a good chance at making a deal in my favor and to take my time getting there. Once I got to the court he greeted me and as we walked through the court house everyone we walked past he knew and was social with everyone there. I felt relieved that he was so well known and was cool with everyone there including the prosecutor. After about 10 minutes of him talking to the prosecutor he came out and told me the good news that my charges were lessened and that I would not be put on probation or lose my license, all of which he told me from the beginning was his plan. He was professional and personable and I am grateful I hired him.

Mr. Livingston was so helpful and showed such dedication he took it upon himself to personally visit me while I was in jail to go over my options and then he showed up at my sentencing personally when he was not supposed to and he was so very professional that I believe it was because of this that I received all the desired actions I was hoping for. I can not Thank him enough.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Howell, Michigan?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
