The team at Keilen Law are outstanding. They have treated my case with the utmost care and respect, without taking me to the cleaners! If you’re a business owner in trouble, I don’t believe that you could do any better than hiring these folks for representation. I highly recommend Ross & Tyler! Great communicators.

I used JRB Law PLLC for a rather messy custody dispute. It was worth every penny. John is easy to talk to, is very experienced, very knowledgeable, will not BS you, and won't let you be jerked around. He is also very reasonably priced. He was easy to reach when I had questions and kept me up to date in a timely manner. John worked really hard to get my issue resolved (and I am quite happy with the outcome) before we were scheduled to go to court which saved me a chunk of money. I will definitely call John again if I have further need of an attorney.

If you have nowhere to turn and need legal help, Mary LaSata Spiegel and Joe Daly from Legal Aid of Western Michigan are there to save the day. Mary and Joe gave us practical, timely guidance on a complicated case. They didn’t judge us and always answered our questions and got back to us with great legal advice. I can’t say enough positive things about Mary and Joe! These are good lawyers who want to help people and really care about the clients they represent. Mary’s a brilliant lawyer that has a lot of credibility within the St. Joseph legal community. Joe worked tirelessly to make sure the facts and laws were accurately represented. It was less intimidating knowing we had Mary and Joe on our side. Not to get into the details but it was a David vs. Goliath case. We pray the outcome brings attention to greedy people victimizing the less fortunate for personal gain. If they let me, I would give 100 stars for the excellent experience we had with Legal Aid. Thank you again Mary and Joe! You were the saving grace of a three-month nightmare that is finally over.

This was my second Divorce and 5th attorney. The first 4 was from my 1st divorce, and for 1 reason or another I could not keep them on the payroll. As in the case with Mary Spiegel she is a high end attorney that is well respected by her peers. So I think I know attorneys who work for you and those that don't. When Mary walks into the court room it goes silent every one knows she is there to do business she is well spoken and very well prepared for anything that might be thrown out there by the opposing party. During the initial constellation Mary took notes and let me talk, then asked clarifying questions. She also sent me home with Homework so she could gather the necessary information that she needed. Every phone call was Returned promptly in a day or two, emails as well. Also if you dial her extension and she is there, she picks up and talks to you. Mary certainly looks out for your best interest ,she will guide you and tell you what the most likely outcome might be. She really cares about her clients, she works for you passionately, she has researched everything for you in the situation on hand. Mary knows the LAW and will tell it to you straight. My Divorce was complicated and confusing with many issues the had come up. However Mary was the strong hold for me through it all by her professionalism and knowledge of the law and how to handle the complicated situations. Mary Spiegel is a one of a kind attorney that is gifted to negotiate with a outcome of victory each and every time.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Kalamazoo, Michigan?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
