Hills At Law took on a complicated case that involved my spouse and myself. They worked strategically, effectively, and tirelessly to make and receive the goals my spouse and I set. They listened and heard our concerns. They have compassion and understood how upsetting the case was and the emotional impact it put on our family. The attorneys on our case and the whole team was absolutely amazing! The experience they have is incredible and gives you that much confidence and comfort for your future. I would recommend to anyone dealing with criminal matters and wanting justice. I thank you all at Hills At Law as they really work as a team- from the receptionist to the lead attorney and everyone in between!

Tony DeAgostino helped me with my case a few months ago and I am extremely happy with the results. He was there every step of the way and got me thru a very hard and challenging time. He's not like other lawyers who will pressure you into the first deal, Tony didn't stop until we reached a good deal. I would absolutely trust this law office and tony with any future legal battles. 100% legit and will go above and beyond for his clients.

Stop your search. Look no further. If you're in need of legal representation, Hills at Law Firm is the only place you need to know. As you embark on the journey of finding the right legal team, let me save you the time and effort: Hills at Law is the pinnacle of excellence in the legal field. With unparalleled dedication, expertise, and unwavering support for their clients, they have earned their reputation as the best in the business. I had the privilege of being represented by Hills at Law Firm during a few pivotal moments in my life, and their unwavering support and belief in me made all the difference. The legal staff is exceptionally supportive and knowledgeable, and a superb and tremendous shout out to Allison for dealing with all the frantic phone calls and anxiety-ridden e-mails. In my first case, dealing with a DUI, I found myself in a challenging situation. However, Hills at Law Firm stood by me, providing not just legal expertise but also genuine support. My lawyer understood the complexity of my circumstances and played a crucial role in helping me achieve sobriety. Their dedication to my well-being went beyond the courtroom, and I am grateful for their guidance during a difficult time. They have been a huge inspiration and role model in my life, despite them being a huge Michigan State fan ;) (Go Blue!) During my second case, I was wrongfully accused and framed for a grave accusation involving my ex-wife. It was a harrowing experience, but Hills at Law Firm, particularly my attorney Lucy DeHaan, never wavered in their belief in me. At a time when doubt surrounded me, Lucy's unwavering support and steadfast advocacy were a beacon of hope. She fought tirelessly to ensure justice prevailed, and her belief in my innocence gave me the strength to persevere. I could write a book about how amazing she was to me and my daughter during this crazy time. She was able to navigate a difficult trial and provide precise excellent legal advice in a timely manner, all while being in her third trimester of pregnancy. In both instances, Hills at Law Firm exemplified professionalism, compassion, and unwavering dedication to their clients. I wholeheartedly recommend their services to anyone in need of legal representation. They not only defended my rights but also restored some of my faith in the justice system. So if you're looking for the team to help you, Hills at Law is where you want to go.

Attorney Reed helped me with the planning and development of my company. I could tell from the start that Phil cared about the success or failure of my business. It was great being able to talk with him without having to worry about being charged for every minute. Phil knows the law and knows business. He had great insights on how to get what we needed done, he knew how to negotiate the right terms and helped me protect my business so I could focus on making money.

I normally would never write a review. But I feel like it would be unfair for me not to recommend Phil to anyone, including my peers. He is top notch, very through, professional, and has honest pricing. Do not hesitate working with him, you will not regret it. Thank you for everything Phil!

Robb is fair and honest. He took care of my legal matter in short order and was very straight forward right from day one. Robb explained my situation very clearly and explained what he thought I should do and proceeded to do just that. He has recently referred me to another attorney for my will and estate planning and I was thrilled with the attorney he referred. Robb is a great guy all the way around.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Kalamazoo, Michigan?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
