Wow! This is my second review to give credit where credit is due. Attorney Podoll has consistently acted as if he’s known my family for twenty years. While he may not be as prompt in returning my novel length emails (hey, I’m new to this process and have been divorcing my divorce for six years), or strategizing with me before the hearings, after working with him I can set my anxiety aside and be assured that he has done his homework. Attorney Podoll is spot on… he even expresses pertinent info like my kids’ ages and my diagnosis. In meetings, he sometimes employs a self deprecating technique that works brilliantly to lighten the tone and by doing so, establish his place as a leader during negotiation. He’s quick to call me out on my stubborn ways of talking endlessly; I do reckon that Attorney Podoll owns some semi permeable strainer that extracts the objective from my charged stories. There is no room for the crazy ex stigma in his world and we are all treated as equals. To employ a metaphor, he’s the difference between a luxury sports car and the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio designed by the Pininfarina chief of Ferrari; rare to see on the road, but one that any car addict should know because it was designed with an amazing story, elegant flair, and impressive specs you’ll never forget. I’m forever in debt to his priceless advice and extremely pleased with the services I’ve received at Sharp Law, even if he hasn’t yet made tshirts for my self proclaimed nickname of Team Tessquire, nor has he started an email with the words, “as your attorney I advise you…” ——> both are easily forgivable 🤣 <——

Tara is an excellent attorney, she always goes above and beyond. I know when I have a problem she will always be available to help me. My only regret with Tara is that she was not my first attorney. I can not speak highly enough about her ability as a lawyer and the type of person she is.

Pros
1
Excellent legal representation and advocacy, with attorneys who are knowledgeable, professional, and fight hard for their clients
“Tara has helped me fight for custody of my daughter for years. In the beginning I felt helpless. She helped me to be patient and assured me that the truth would come out, as it has.”
2
Attorneys provide clear communication, keep clients informed, and are responsive to questions and concerns
“Attorney Chris Podoll handled my divorce case recently. He took the time to listen to my concerns and opinions. He offered sage advice prior to trial activities through the final judgment.”
3
Compassionate and caring approach, with attorneys who understand the emotional and personal nature of legal matters
“Tara is caring, thoughtful, kind and respectful. I have nothing but good things to say.”
Cons
1
Lack of communication and responsiveness from the firm, with some clients reporting difficulty getting updates or having their calls/emails returned
“Countless emails to her went unanswered and everyone in the office seemed uninterested in my communication difficulties.”
2
Concerns about potential conflicts of interest or questionable ethical practices by some attorneys
“It seemed to me that she had been giving him advice prior to her realizing that this the man I would be divorcing...(there were reasons I suspected this, she was also friends with someone on my facebook page, my daughter's babysitter.. who was causing problems between me and my husband, another conflict of interest...in retrospect POSSIBLY she should have recused herself and not been my lawyer??)”

When my therapist finally convinced me to apply for disability I had already eaten through my savings in denial and was in a pretty bad place (though thankfully was safe and had a roof over my head, but I wasn't doing very well otherwise). I was overwhelmed and not sure how to proceed. My mother is a nurse so she asked around for colleagues who knew about the process, and one recommended Mr. Silverman - that was the best stroke of luck I could have asked for. He was thorough and businesslike, on top of everything, kept meticulous records and chased every possible avenue. But he was also patient with me, sympathetic, and possessed of a humanity and no-nonsense humbleness you wish you could get in your doctors let alone your attorney. I probably felt more embarrassed about my situation than he did, and he tirelessly did the necessary research not only to know exactly what to do, what I was entitled to by law, and how to go about it, but also what things I needed to focus on to make sure the proper authoritative channels understood my situation in a way that was meaningful to them (important when you're an adult with a late ADHD diagnosis- he sifted through my chatter and knew which things were the needed information and which were not). Through the whole long process, he was there getting things done, rolling with the inevitable snags and figuring out how to get over those hurdles, and keeping me up to date on what was happening, even letting me know now and then he was still on things just because it had been a while and we were still waiting. I never could have done it on my own, but I'm also confident he went above and beyond and strongly recommend specifically this man to help you out with legal advice. Knowing I had him in my corner kept me calm through the journey and I recently got my first disability payment, which hopefully will be the start of me getting a better handle on my health now that the millstone of supporting myself is lifted from my shoulders. When he told me these reviews helped others find him I couldn't click the page fast enough. Hire him, I promise you won't be sorry, and I want him to be successful and happy forever because he really helped me out through something very difficult, and I don't care if it is his job I'll be grateful forever, he did a great job and he's a good bloke in my book.

I went to Mr. Silverman after losing my first appeal for disability, as most people do. Sam explained the processes, what he would be doing, kept me informed as the case moved along thru the appeals process to a successful conclusion in a hearing in front of a judge. He made the whole process simple for me, did what he said he was going to do, and was open and honest about costs. I can't thank him enough.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Kalamazoo, Michigan?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
