When my therapist finally convinced me to apply for disability I had already eaten through my savings in denial and was in a pretty bad place (though thankfully was safe and had a roof over my head, but I wasn't doing very well otherwise). I was overwhelmed and not sure how to proceed. My mother is a nurse so she asked around for colleagues who knew about the process, and one recommended Mr. Silverman - that was the best stroke of luck I could have asked for. He was thorough and businesslike, on top of everything, kept meticulous records and chased every possible avenue. But he was also patient with me, sympathetic, and possessed of a humanity and no-nonsense humbleness you wish you could get in your doctors let alone your attorney. I probably felt more embarrassed about my situation than he did, and he tirelessly did the necessary research not only to know exactly what to do, what I was entitled to by law, and how to go about it, but also what things I needed to focus on to make sure the proper authoritative channels understood my situation in a way that was meaningful to them (important when you're an adult with a late ADHD diagnosis- he sifted through my chatter and knew which things were the needed information and which were not). Through the whole long process, he was there getting things done, rolling with the inevitable snags and figuring out how to get over those hurdles, and keeping me up to date on what was happening, even letting me know now and then he was still on things just because it had been a while and we were still waiting. I never could have done it on my own, but I'm also confident he went above and beyond and strongly recommend specifically this man to help you out with legal advice. Knowing I had him in my corner kept me calm through the journey and I recently got my first disability payment, which hopefully will be the start of me getting a better handle on my health now that the millstone of supporting myself is lifted from my shoulders. When he told me these reviews helped others find him I couldn't click the page fast enough. Hire him, I promise you won't be sorry, and I want him to be successful and happy forever because he really helped me out through something very difficult, and I don't care if it is his job I'll be grateful forever, he did a great job and he's a good bloke in my book.

I went to Mr. Silverman after losing my first appeal for disability, as most people do. Sam explained the processes, what he would be doing, kept me informed as the case moved along thru the appeals process to a successful conclusion in a hearing in front of a judge. He made the whole process simple for me, did what he said he was going to do, and was open and honest about costs. I can't thank him enough.

Mr. Silverman stayed diligent in contact with me on every step of the way with paperwork he received from my doctors , what information he submitted and received from Social Security . He was patient with follow up questions and returned every phone call I made to him because of him I was awarded my case

Silverman won my case. I was afraid I would lose my case again before I met Silverman. I worked for the Federal Government for over 10years. I was basically forced to resign while on medical leave due to the denying of FF/Medical leave etc. I worried that my case would continue to be mishandled. I needed an attorney who didn't fear to battle the bias things that was happening with my case as result of being an ex fed. Silverman was the attorney for the job. I explained to Silverman my fears about the handling of the case. Silverman assured me not to worry that he has seen it all before. As I thought, the case was being mishandled by employees whom I once worked with who didn't follow proper handling guidelines. Silverman again assured me that his job is to deal with them and again for me not to worry about anything. Finally I had found an attorney I knew I could trust. An attorney that isn't intimidated. An attorney who put faith back in me that regardless of what was going on, my case would not be discriminated against on his watch. An attorney who fought strong, fair, and by the book. Silverman called to tell me that I had won the case, but I knew I had won the day I met Silverman when he calmed my fears about the case. To have an attorney I could trust meant the world to me. I finally felt like my voice was being heard. Silverman is a great example of integrity. I had lost all hope of getting justice before Silverman. Thank God... my father had given me a silver dollar piece when I was younger. I always knew the value in the Silverman this is what caught my attention while I was searching for an attorney. Justice was finally served thanks to Silverman.... K

Attorney Reed helped me with the planning and development of my company. I could tell from the start that Phil cared about the success or failure of my business. It was great being able to talk with him without having to worry about being charged for every minute. Phil knows the law and knows business. He had great insights on how to get what we needed done, he knew how to negotiate the right terms and helped me protect my business so I could focus on making money.

I normally would never write a review. But I feel like it would be unfair for me not to recommend Phil to anyone, including my peers. He is top notch, very through, professional, and has honest pricing. Do not hesitate working with him, you will not regret it. Thank you for everything Phil!

Robb is fair and honest. He took care of my legal matter in short order and was very straight forward right from day one. Robb explained my situation very clearly and explained what he thought I should do and proceeded to do just that. He has recently referred me to another attorney for my will and estate planning and I was thrilled with the attorney he referred. Robb is a great guy all the way around.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Kalamazoo, Michigan?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
