I'll start by saying she was pleasant, but I don't think she spent much time working on my case. I found her using the free advocacy program. She told me she would call me days ahead of my phone hearing to discuss the case in detail, but I didn't receive a call from her until the morning of the case. We spoke briefly before I had my phone hearing. She did not present important evidence related to my case during the phone hearing and I lost the case. I did win on an appeal, using a different attorney that I paid for. Again, she was pleasant, but I just don't feel she spent hardly any time on my case and did not present important evidence on my behalf.

Ms. Webster represented me as a defendant in a UIA case and was very helpful, knowledgeable and professional. She promptly returned my phone call and listened to my side of the story. It was a refreshing experience to be sure. Thanks again Stella!

I was a little bewildered when I received my hearing notice. I called 3 advocates and had to leave a message with each. Stella called back within 15 minutes (the only one to call back). She asked clear questions and gave clear instructions on the steps to take. She encouraged me and instilled her confidence in me. Her follow through was excellent. She worked with me through flexible schedules. I highly recommend her.

Stella knows unemployment law forward and backward and has many years of professional and personal experience in dealing with administrative law judges in the State of Michigan. She actually listens to her clients and does not beat around the bush. She returned all phone calls and always exhibited a positive attitude. Just remember, she cannot tie the judge’s hands. In the rare event you lose your case she will guide you through the next appeal process. Stella Webster has my vote for exemplary professionalism, unemployment law knowledge and the drive to win your case.

I had the privilege of working with Bill and I cannot recommend him highly enough not only as an outstanding attorney but also a compassionate and effective professional. His commitment to professionalism and ethical practices stood out throughout our interactions. His attention to detail, analytical skills and thorough understanding of how to best fight for you through the legal process were impressive. Going through legal matters can be emotionally challenging, but Bill’s empathetic yet pragmatic approach made a significant difference. He patiently guided me through the divorce process including mediation sessions, ensuring that my concerns were addressed and my rights protected. Thank you, Bill, for your exceptional service!

I had a really wonderful experience working with Lise. First off, I found out about Lise because she was referred to me from another one of her clients who had told me she went above and beyond for them, and because of her knowledge in her field she was able to work magic and get him additional benefits in his divorce case. When I had started working with Lise, i TRUSTED her completley throughout the process. My case was a child support/custody/ paternity case and she got me everything i asked for and more! I wanted to have my first born sons name changed since my kids father is not involved, and a previous lawyer i talked to immidietley told me that this would not be possible. Lise was able to fight for me and for the things i wanted no matter what I asked, she had a very Yes before No attitude and was willing to try. This process was painless and she was absolutley worth the investment. I will be recommending her to anyone i know that needs a lawyer in family law. Lise, thankyou thankyou so much! The work you do changes peoples lives and you have definatley impacted mine. Best wishes, Sam!

Lise was by far one of the most capable and knowledgeable lawyers I could have hoped for. She was consistently able to determine the best response and course of action to mitigate the conflict. She is willing to fight tooth and nail for her client, but maintains a rational, level head when developing a game plan. I highly recommend her services for anyone struggling to come to terms with their spouse and separation.

I couldn't have gone to a better lawyer. Ryan explained every step of the process clearly, and really took a lot of the anxiety out of the process of filing for bankruptcy. Best decision i ever made. Thank you Ryan! Patty

A friend had referred me over to Ryan after I was worried about my debt. When I reached out, Ryan immediately calmed me down and explained every step of the process thoroughly and clearly. He held my hand throughout the entire process setting very clear expectations. Every phone call, email, text message was replied to swiftly and I was not in the dark not one bit. Ryan was amazing to speak to and work with. You are doing yourself a disservice if you decide to go with anyone other than Ryan for your bankruptcy needs.

Ryan did a great job helping me get my debts off my back. I am now on a cash-only budget, and it feels good to live within my (meager) means. Ryan is great to work with, and can likely help you, too.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Lake Orion, Michigan?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
