Pros
1
Highly skilled and experienced criminal defense attorney
“Karl is professional, direct, courteous, kempt, sharp, and keen. When my freedom was threatened by the overzealous prosecutor and shoddy police work, I first went to another attorney that inspired zero confidence of a not-guilty verdict. I am so glad I shopped around and made the decision to hire Karl.”
2
Thorough and diligent in preparing and defending cases
“What was so impressive about Mr. Numinen's defense of our son was that he was incredibly prepared for the prosecution's witnesses taking their testimonies apart one-by-one and finding all the holes and discrepancies.”
3
Achieves excellent results, including dismissals and not-guilty verdicts
“He won't tip toe around the reality of your predicament or fill you up with false hope just to get your money. He doesn't need to. His history speaks for itself and the respect he has in this community and amongst the members of the Marquette County Judiciary give him the backing he needs to give you the best possible outcome. He truly made the impossible possible for me today with news of a full dismissal of my case.”
4
Provides personalized attention and support to clients
“Karl took care of everything! He thoroughly investigated my case, kept in contact with me the whole time, and re-assured me that I would be okay.”
5
Highly respected and trusted by the legal community
“If you're considering hiring Karl to represent you in court than you should consider it no longer. Hiring him is the best decision you can make.”
Cons
1
May not always provide the fastest response time
“I wish our questions were answered a little faster and in our case he told us the worst case scenario and in the everything worked out for the best. So needless to say we were on pins and needles until the hearing.”
2
Can be intense and aggressive in the courtroom
“Karl is a BEAST!”

Karl was fantastic, I got into some trouble at the border traveling into the states. My visa was at risk. I was being charged with two felonies. Karl took my case, we had hoped the best case scenario was to get them dropped to misdemeanors. But Karl was able to get the entire case dropped and dismissed. What a magician. Thank you so Much

We want to thank Karl for taking our son’s case which was a criminal matter in Dickinson County, Michigan. We retained Karl Numinen because of his outstanding reputation. This was undoubtedly one of the most challenging times in our life as we watched our son go through this process and how rudely people treated him in the Dickinson County area. Thank goodness for Karl and his staff for getting us through this and getting him a good result at sentencing. I am very grateful Karl. Good job. One more thing. To Abigail, Anne and Karl. Thank you for being so patient with me. I know I was a lot to deal with.

I can't thank Karl and his team enough for taking my case, treating it seriously and winning it in court. I was involved in a vehicle accident where, tragically, a person died and I was charged with his death. When we met Karl to discuss the charges, he told me that I hadn't done anything wrong and was surprised that the DA was pursuing a conviction. Karl never waiver'd from this stance. He and his team, collected data, records and crash scene photos and reports, then meticulously studied all of the evidence to put together a winning argument that proved very successful. Karl was extremely knowledgeable of the law and used that knowledge with a confident courtroom presence to dominate the trial proceedings. My family's exact words, "Karl is a BEAST!" They all agree that Karl Numinen was, without a doubt, the right attorney for my case, and he won it convincingly! Very Grateful, Jerry

I would like to take this opportunity to leave a review for Karl Numinen in hopes of helping others in a similar situation looking for guidance in the legal process as I was. I am a young professional who was pulled over and arrested for a DUI. The first major step was selecting an attorney, which is how I met Mr. Numinen after having him recommended by a close friend who had been impressed by his skill and professionalism during her divorce case. I had met with several others but took a risk in selecting him based on his confidence, competence, experience, and mostly the effort he put into getting to know me, the case, and what was important to me as far as the outcome. Personally, a DUI would have been devastating to my career, and unlike any of the other attorneys, Mr. Numinen took the time and effort to identify the best possible outcome for my individual situation and invested whatever time and resources necessary to do his best to achieve this (which he did). As the evidence of the case became available to us, Mr. Numinen was meticulous in finding the flaws in the arrest, charge, and details of the case by combing through every second of police footage and asking me detailed questions. Because of his diligence, the respect he has earned in the community, and his professional conduct and communication within the judicial system, he made it possible to get a plea deal from the prosecutor. I was told by members of the court that my outcome was only possible because of the fact that I had selected him as my attorney as most others would have settled for a plea deal much more severe than the one I received. Every case is different, but the outcome of my case exceeded my expectations. In addition to achieving the best possible final outcome, Mr. Numinen was nothing but professional with me, was able to ease my fears and give me realistic scenarios and expectations. On several occasions, he met with me over the phone or in person just to address my concerns or fears directly and factually, going above and beyond to prepare me for every step of the judicial process. If you ever find yourself in a similar scenario and want to be treated professionally, with compassion, and be defended by someone you can trust to take your case seriously to achieve the best possible outcome for your individual situation, rather than treating it like another job or another case, please take my advice and hire Mr. Numinen. My life would have had a completely different trajectory had I not hired him as my attorney.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Marquette, Michigan?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
