I hired Mr. Osment for a OWI offense, he was prompt, always responsive almost immediately, encouraging, attentive, and fought hard for my case! Jeff was there every step of the way for me! Probation records immediate jail time for me, and the judge did not go with that recommendation! Jeff not only reduced my charge, he also kept me out of jail! I know if I had not had him representing me, my outcome would have been different! If you need an attorney, I HIGHLY recommend Mr. Osment!

Absolutely fantastic. I would recommend him to any of my friends and family. I was immediately impressed when I received a call back within a few minutes of my first call. Mr. Osment spend time going over my case on the phone and I knew then how dedicated he would be. I meet with him in person two days later and was impressed by his professionalism. He handled my case quickly and successfully. He also made the point to reach out to me as soon as he had any information. His integrity was obvious and really appealed to me. The staff was equally caring and took the time to talk to me after hours. I appreciate how everything was handled. I’m thankful that he came highly recommended by another attorney. Everything was perfect and I couldn’t be happier.

I have a laundry list of drug felonies... Unfortunately with covid and losing my job I started back up doing some stuff I shouldn't. I thought I was going to need an out of town lawyer to fight for the best possible outcome. So I went with a highly reviewed lawyer From this site with all those special little awards that go next to their names and that didn't get me Nowhere after my arraignment I had to pay a bond And get a stupid tether on my leg. After hearing my so called "Super Lawyer" talk in court I knew I needed to keep looking! So I did... When I talked to my bail bondsman who was an old family friend he immediately told me about Jeff! He called him the "miracle plea worker". And as the bondsman's 32+ years of experience as being a probation/parole officer for MDOC he has been in court on the other side of the table as Jeff Manny Many Times... So I got ahold of Jeff... Within Two darn hours and No Money even given to him yet he had given me more help than any other lawyer I've ever had! He had already talked to the prosecutors and had a deal setup. (In two hours) So I Immediately retained Jeff and let go of my "highly reviewed" lawyer. Since then he has worked very hard to do his best to get the Best possible outcome! And that's what I was looking for! I knew I needed the best person available to get the best result and Jeff-Mr Osment is the man for all different types of cases Not just Dui... He has the No BS work method and knowledge and with that he has gained the respect of the prosecutors and judges especially in Monroe County. The very next court date Jeff got that tether off my leg! And now he got me a great plea deal that I can accept and get this step in my life over with... I was very depressed and disappointed in myself for going back to some of my old ways. I now am going into court with confidence that I will come out alright. He has given me some hope by using his experience and relationships to get things done. He has respect from the court and I could very well tell that the first court appearance we had. The courts don't want to tie up docket time and resources so they want to move files quick. When dealing with Jeff he also moves quick and there's a method to it that works... The court knows Jeff don't BS and they work very well with him... He has proven results and I'm here to leave my two cents. Most criminals don't get online and leave reviews. Lol. So all these other lawyers with a ton of reviews deal with petty cases. With Jeff I'm free to get all my ducks in a row before I have to head to the big house or God willing the county jail!... And I pray for the least amount of time as possible!! Don't let a few bad mistakes think you have ruined your life. Get a Good lawyer who can actually get results! . But I'm praying for the best possible outcome and I'll keep Jeff in My corner. His communication is also a huge plus. He wastes No Time! Thanks Jeff!...

Out of great appreciation and respect for Joel I would like to share with everyone what a great job he has done and I'm sure would do for anyone else. Joel Kershaw is a very respectable person and lawyer. He always went the extra mile for me and remained attentive and concerned with my case, situation, and needs therein. Joel also did whatever possible to remove stress from the situation on my behalf. It would be a great decision and opportunity to acquire Joel as your counsel. Thank you Joel Kershaw for your exemplary services.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Monroe, Michigan?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
