Pros

2
Knowledgeable, competent, and experienced attorney
“His knowledge of the laws, his preparation and court room presence was second to none! I could see that he was well known downtown in the courthouse amongst his cohorts and immensely respected and that included with the judge.”
3
Personable and makes clients feel at ease
“He also has a unique way of making you feel at ease and comfortable that he has everything under control which helped me in the relief of stress.”
4
Responsive and accessible to clients
“He was easy to contact when I had questions and if he wasn't in the office he would return calls in a timely manner.”
5
Affordable legal services
“Took care of my case with great diligence. Very responsible, timely and fought my case like a bulldog. Very affordable and strongly recommended!”
Cons
1
Unresponsive and difficult to reach
“I Consultanted with Mr. VITITOE in July paid up front in full to have him handle my case. We had one appt after consultation and I've been trying to reach him since and he has not gotten back to me. It's mid October and he has yet to getahold of me. I've called multiple times a week, stopped in and no sign of him ever.”
2
Lack of communication and follow-through
“After I paid the money upfront to retain him, he became all but reachable. Phone call after phone call was not returned. I even cancelled personal appointments to be able to show up at the office where I was told he was not there and to try to call again. When I finally did reach him, after weeks and months, he claimed that he had not received any contact from me.”

Going into court, I was positive I had a case where I had no worries; an easy in and out. Matt made it very clear all the legal angles that I had not considered; ALL possible ways the case COULD end. There was no sugar coating...he was straight to the point and wasted no time getting what needed done, done. I am 100% confident had I had other representation, my criminal defebse outcome would not have turned out as well as it did.

I’ve had a $10000 Attorney and I’ve also had a $500 dollar Attorney Mr. Vititoe did an outstanding job, he made sure I had no jail time, he had a clear understanding of my case and the process I would be going through. I highly recommend this attorney rather paid for or court appointed.

Mr. Vititoe is knowledgeable, dependable, and has taken a real interest in my proceedings. He is the first person I call when I need an attorney. And I would highly recommend him to anyone needing an attorney. He has an attention to detail and sees each client as a person, rather than a paycheck.

It's mid October and he has yet to getahold of me. I've called multiple times a week, stopped in and no sign of him ever. He's always out of the office when I'm trying to get ahold of him. I'm beyond furious. Do not , I rrpest do not have him handle your case. Very unprofessional, my case should of been doneand over with by now. I called other lawyers and they told me its only a couple month process. He hasn't even done what should of been taken care of Two weeks after I paid him.

Out of great appreciation and respect for Joel I would like to share with everyone what a great job he has done and I'm sure would do for anyone else. Joel Kershaw is a very respectable person and lawyer. He always went the extra mile for me and remained attentive and concerned with my case, situation, and needs therein. Joel also did whatever possible to remove stress from the situation on my behalf. It would be a great decision and opportunity to acquire Joel as your counsel. Thank you Joel Kershaw for your exemplary services.

  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Monroe, Michigan?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
