Well, I would strongly advise against using mr. Houghtaling! i trusted him and he abused that trust. We had an arrangement and I still don’t know to this day why he gave up literally and failed to communicate with me what was happening. We had 21 days to respond to the courts and he totally would not respond to me. I went into office, he told me he could fix all of it to my face , then to again go to no communication. Not really sure what type of man does that, I was making monthly payments. So I don’t think that was it. Maybe this is what lawyers do, I don’t really know. I feel like he set me up for failure. I’m sad cause I lost a lot now and that I trusted him!

Do not hire this attorney! He talked about all the things he will do and then never returns calls, texts or emails. I called and texted 3 of 5 days a week and never heard from him. Went to court for a hearing scheduled by my ex-husband to be and no prior appt or even a meeting at the court house with him was done before we met with opposing counsel and I lost because Mr Houghtaling did not pay attention to details in the proposal. I am now paying all the bills at the martial home, including mortgage payment and all credit cards, earning 1/2 of the income of my ex to be. My ex-husband to be is informed by his attorney of everything in the case and I still am asking questions and not getting answers. I need to fire this guy!!! Which I intend to do.

We hired Chris to handle a Probate case. I've had to remind his office several times to complete paperwork that needed to be submitted for the case. His paralegal lacks the ability to effectively communicate and is very short with us over the phone. She acts as though every phone call is bothersome to her and wasting her time. They repeatedly give us conflicting advice and don't seem to listen very well. I've asked for return phone calls from Chris and as of right now, I still haven't received the return phone call I asked for in August 2016. Three times in a row he cancelled our appointments after we took time off of work to meet with him. I'm not real sure why it is so difficult for him to tend to his paying clients, but Chris nor his Paralegal seem client focused. I am very disappointed in his lack of ability to follow through on all the things he's promised us he would do.

I brief moment in time turned my life upside down. I contacted Chris for an appointment and got in right away. He was very easy to talk to and helped me understand what I was up against. He provided real expectations and he didn't over charge for his services. His fees were very fair all things considered. Chris helped me challenge a PPO and the original version was amended twice. Once to allow me to enter my work place and the second, to allow me to gather my belongings from my ex-wife's house. Chris defended me in a SM assault case (first offense). I never had to post bond and I was ultimately granted special probation. (avoided jail time!!) Chris also helped me challenge a related restitution claim and had the total reduced by $400. Chris also handled my divorce and this went as smooth as could be expected. Chris typically answers his cell phone and will talk to you on the spot. If he can't talk right then, he'll always return your call in a reasonable amount of time. Chris cares about his clients and their families. Chris also has solid professional relationships with other lawyers, based on the interactions I saw. I highly recommend Chris to anyone needing a lawyer in the Muskegon area.

Katie assisted me with drafting the final judgement on my divorce since it was difficult for me to do it on my own. In the process I was informed of much that was lacking and needing more detail and Katie did an excellent job of going over the necessary information. Additionally, she went as far as attending my hearing date - which she didn't have to - as a measure of assurance. Because of this she not only did me a necessary service with legal paperwork but also provided me comfort and support. Katie met me where I was in every way that I needed. She is a gift from above. :)

I was referred to Micheal to have a will done. I found him to be very personalbe and comfortable to deal with. Michael was also extremely reasonable with his rates. The work was done when he said it would be done. I had to change a couple of things toward the end and he graciously did this without any inconvience shown at all. I would go back to him for further work if necessary.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Muskegon, Michigan?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
