After meeting with Richard for our Son's OVI, he was upfront and said he cannot make any promises, but he would do his best. He went above and beyond, and we were very happy with the outcome with his case. Richard is very dependable with phone calls/text messages/emails/very prompt in responding if we had questions or issues. Thank you for all your help thru this difficult time.

I would highly recommend Richard if you find yourself needing a lawyer. I was facing some tough charges that could of really jeopardize and derailed my career. Richard was able to get my charges reduced and favorable ruling. He also worked with my financial situation to make sure I did not walk into court alone or with someone unqualified. Richard will forever be my first call and recommendation whenever legal services are needed.

I was in a bad car accident, that wasn’t my fault. I ended up with the ticket. I contacted Richard Small and he sorted everything out. I went to court, Richard was on time. He knew all the right things to say and told me how to approach the situation. He was able to bring the ticket down to something less, that wouldn’t show up on my record. I would strongly recommend this lawyer to anyone. He knows what he’s doing and he knows what’s best for his client.

She is a absolute powerhouse! When it comes to family court I would never recommend anyone else but Mary right here! It was a tough case I know my ex was good at lying so I was scared going into the process right away with that fact, there were so many unknowns but as soon as I had my consult I immediately felt at ease and knew she was the lawyer for my case. She is so helpful, it didn’t matter how many questions we had she had answers whenever we needed them and at whatever time in the divorce process. She was also very emotionally supportive and invested which made the process so much easier even at times that were so hard I wanted to rip my hair out. It was a great feeling to know and feel like I was 100 percent supported in this way and like she had my back no matter what, i felt it beyond more than just the fact I was one of many clients. She helped win the case and even at times I felt like nothing was going right she would put me at ease and made whatever I wanted to happen possible, with that being said she never just told me what I wanted to hear she was very straight forward and knowledgeable to where I always felt better after I would talk to her that things would be ok, and they always were. There really isn’t enough that could be said about these Mary, I would highly recommend her to anyone out there. She helped me in so many ways through this process and were so professional, knowledgeable, friendly and caring with my daughters best interest at heart which was just hands down amazing!

Steve Reina has represented me in every one of the hardest times in my life. He did not merely represent me, he guided me through the cases and fought for me with the respect, vigor, and understanding that the course of my life depended on the outcome. His passion is apparent, and he takes care of his clients. I hope that if you need an attorney to fight for you, that you have Mr. Reina by your side.

Steve was excellent, again! This is the second time I’ve had Steve represent me and in both cases he went above and beyond. In what seemed like a no win case, in both cases, he prevailed! I would highly recommend to anyone who feels they have a no win case to give Steve a call. Thanks Steve. Your hard work and dedication are greatly appreciated!

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Pontiac, Michigan?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
