Matthew Curtis is a truly excellent attorney. He and his staff, especially Linda, always treated me with the utmost respect. His extreme expertise, personability, and patience helped guide me through the crazy stress following my auto accident. Matt always answered all of my MANY questions with kindness and made sure I understood the process. I will be forever grateful for all he has done!!! Matt Curtis went above and beyond throughout my entire case, even guiding me afterward- making him, in my eyes, "The Best of the Best." - Stephanie R.

I was referred to Matt Curtis from an attorney's office in my city. From the first telephone conversation with Matt and his team I felt confident I didn't need to look any further for an attorney. Matt Curtis was the correct person for the medical malpractice case for my husband's death. My decision was confirmed every step of the way that I had indeed been referred to the best lawyer I could possibly have hoped for. I know for sure he would have had my husbands stamp of approval. Matt is extremely dedicated to his clients and their best interest. He is down to earth, friendly, compassionate, easy to work with and a fighter for his clients. Whenever I needed to talk to him he always asked about how I was doing before he got down to business. He saw and treated me as a person and not just a case file. He stayed on top of my case, kept progress moving forward and kept me informed every step of the way. Matt worked hard to get justice for my husband. He responds to emails and telephone calls in a very timely manner. He was there for me! He is extremely knowledgeable about the law he practices. Venturing into a medical malpractice case was a daunting task. Matt made it manageable. His staff is incredible. They all hold themselves to high standards. Beyond the outstanding knowledge and professionalism, I appreciated his down to earth friendly approach. I always felt like I was talking to a friend rather than an attorney. You want the best? Hire Matt Curtis. I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Matthew Curtis was recommended to me and after the initial consultation with him, I knew that I didn’t need to look any further for an attorney. I would like to say my case was as easy as pulling a rabbit out of a hat, but on the contrary, I had a very difficult case. Matt believed in me for the start and worked very hard to get a judgement that far exceeded my expectations. He explained everything to me from start to finish and if I had a question, he responded immediately - Matt is the consummate professional. As I was leaving the building after my deposition, I bumped into the court reporter who took my statement and she stated, “you have a great attorney.” Although, I knew that Matt Curtis was an amazing attorney, it was nice to get confirmation from a court reporter working with hundreds of attorneys, that I did in fact have the best attorney. Also, I thankful for the staff at Somers Schwartz and their assistance with my case. Thank you Matt Curtis for everything.

This was my first time going through anything such as a medical lawsuit or even working with an attorney. My oldest son, was born with an "undetected" heart defect resulting in the need of him being"revived" which left him a "stroke survivor". Our case was 11 years in the making with many ups and downs. Our attorney Matthew Curtis never gave up. He was tough very professional and knew his stuff! Our case was very difficult and challenging therefore was very time consuming. Each step of the way Matt explained what was going on, what I could expect and he always kept in contact through emails or phone calls. If I ever had any questions or concerns Matt was just an email or phone call away- he was quick to get back to me too! Matt is sincere, kind and compassionate, he has become more than just our Attorney he is more like family! I highly recommend contacting Matt if you ever find yourself in need of a top-notch Attorney. His kindness, professionalism, wisdom and personal concern is astounding!

Mr. Curtis is an amazingly, incredible person and I am very grateful to have had him work on my case. He was only a phone call away and I always received a call back if I had any questions within an hour or so. He would fully explain to me what I needed to understand and on several occasions, made me realize that he would go the extra mile for his clients to make sure they are content. I had an extremely tough case(many well known MI lawyers wouldn't take) and he took me and I am beyond happy with the results. You will be in good hands with Mr. Curtis. The whole office is so friendly, including his paralegals who I called several times with questions and they were so helpful. If it wasn't for Mr. Curtis and his wonderful assistants, I wouldn't be where I am today.

Mr. Goldman handled my case with professionalism and tact. Very good listener and adviser. Felt non- stressed during our appearance before the Judge. When I had problems using "Zoom" for the court case Mr. Goldman was sure I was able to communicate with the court explaining the problem. A very good person. I would recommend his services.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Southfield, Michigan?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
