She has been a delight to work and consult with. She is more than fair, knows her stuff, and is very sympathetic and understanding. I have spoken with many attorneys over the years and she has made me feel the most comfortable in the quickest amount of time, and you know it's actually genuine. I also love how quick she responds to emails and how she backs everything up with sources. I highly recommend her for consultations, reviews, and full representation. Godspeed!

My husband and I have been through hell with the family court system regarding support, custody, and a biological mother that just wants to exploit the system her children and my husband for financial gain. Just like everyone else's reviews Michelle responded in less than 24 hrs. She was kind sincere and most importantly HONEST. Her prices were accurate on her website and her knowledge of the law exemplary. She not only volunteered information freely, she helped me come up with ways to cut costs by doing the paperwork myself while guiding me through it. She is integrity and grace personified and when our other lawyer had abandoned us and ignored us, she became our guardian angel. She never made any dishonest guarantees and was forthright the entire way through and has also helped us manage expectations while giving us the tools we need to fight the Family Court. She works TIRELESSLY, literally around the clock. I am still amazed such an incredible person exists and grateful she was there for us.

My husband and I repeatedly consulted with Attorney Steffen. She is a bit of a hero to me creating real value-add in a flawed system, providing a much-needed service that most attorneys won't do - educate the clients. I appreciate that she validated but didn't pander to my husband and I as clients. Most importantly, she is competent relative to knowledge and skills. She provided us with excellent financial advice as well as emotional support. I highly recommend her services and am so grateful for her.

Desperate to find someone that knew the child support laws in the State of Michigan and living in New Jersey and facing a deadline within a few days to respond to the Friend of the Court, I searched the internet trying to find someone or something that could help my son-in-law resolve an issue in which he was notified of a dramatic increase in the amount of child support for his daughter living in Michigan. During that research I came across a website that read, “Michigan Child Support Calculator. Complete and correct. Always free. A legal advocacy project of Michelle Steffen, Attorney.” It was an answer to our prayers. With the information I had, I immediately tried to use the calculator on her site. Not really knowing if the information I was providing was correct, I did attempt to complete the calculator form and found that the amount I was calculating was much lower than the Friend of the Court calculated. I immediately emailed Michelle asking for some advice on the matter. She responded within hours that evening. The next morning I emailed all the documents to her and within 24 hours, she had recalculated the case and found numerous deductions that the Friend of the Court failed to take into consideration in doing their calculations and also found errors the Friend of the Court paperwork contained. Her calculations suggested that the child support increase appeared to be approximately $150 a month more than it should have been once all the deductions allowed were included. For minimal cost, she prepared all the documents that needed to be submitted and my son-in-law was able to meet the deadline for submission. Although all of our conversations and transactions occurred through email, I found Michelle to be the most knowledgeable, dedicated and compassionate attorney you could ever work with. From the minute we made contact until every last detail was finalized, she never once hesitated to answer questions and find the exact parts of the law that pertained to this case. Michelle, we cannot thank you enough for everything that you have done for us. You are truly an exceptional attorney, and we would highly recommend you to anyone who needs assistance dealing with child support matters involving a child/children living in the State of Michigan.

I was referred by a business client of mine who recommended Greg to me. Greg was very attentive, kept me informed of every aspect of my case, and was extremely knowledgeable in the subject matter. In short, his reputation preceded him. He is great in court and made opposing counsel look lost and unprepared. I would highly recommend Greg and his law firm.

Mr. Grant represented myself and my employer in a case where we feared having to pay a lot of money. To our surprise, Mr. Grant was able to get the case dismissed and did so in a swift manner. He worked very hard for us and deserves all of his recent success.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Traverse City, Michigan?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
