My husband and I hired Robert as our lawyer for a custody case we had with my daughter. He was honest and told us his thoughts and how we should proceed. He didn't ask for a huge retainer up front like most lawyers did. He helped me get my daughter home. She was 5 at the time and she's now almost 11 years old and doing good. Thank you!

Robert is a good, solid, and straightforward attorney. My case was handled quickly and efficiently, and he kept me apprised all the way. Robert took the time to hear my concerns and did everything within his power to get the best outcome, which was amazing! Charges dropped. Robert was honest as well. Part of my retainer was even refunded. Most attorneys I feel would have kept the excess fees paid to them. I HIGHLY recommend Levasseur Law!!

Hands down, best attorney in the area. I was appointed Mr. Levasseur as my public defender for a felony case. First time meeting with him to discuss my case and I had a bad attitude about the whole situation. Well, he gave the facts to me straight, and took the time to explain things I had misconceptions about. I was always able to get ahold of him and discuss details of my case so I felt confident I had adequate representation. He really knows what he is doing and is well respected in the courthouse. I took the case to trial, and the day before trial he called me to let know he had spoken with the prosecutor and that the case was being dropped. The guy is on top of his game and I got a lot of respect for him after he was willing to go to bat for me like that and I couldnt have had a better outcome!!

I was assigned Mr. Levasseur as a public attorney by the court for a felony possession case. Mr. Levasseur went to bat for me to make sure my rights were protected. Our meetings and the updates were always on time. I was always confident after speaking to Mr. Levasseur about my case. Thank you!!

For a fraction of the what the bigger firms ask he gets the job done. I ended up with a $50 court fee on what may have been a few thousand. He met with me twice, and court was maybe a few minutes and that's all there was. His secretary kept me in the loop for the entire thing. The only issue I had was operating times. I waited outside twice when they were scheduled to be open, chall that up to have a full client list. Well worth it!

All 3 of the lawyers and the receptionists are amazing to work with. They take the time to answer questions, no matter how little or big they are. They make sure to keep you in the loop on what's going on and they do all they can to get you what you deserve. They go above and beyond what any other lawyer has done. We will always be thankful to have had the opportunity to have them take on our case. Mark took on 2 big parts of our case, then for the 3rd part, he recruited Bill. We then had some hurdles to hop through and ended up working with all the guys in the office. It has been an honor to have had these guys on our team. From the bottom of our hearts, through dealing with an enormous and very complicated case, we thank you all for taking the time, and effort, and the hours and hours of work, to help us and we can't thank you enough for all you have done. I recommend these guys any day! They will help you get where you need to be and will not rest. They will keep you in the loop, answer any questions, guide you, support you, and listen to you.

Hands down the best decision was to hire Megan. She is not only friendly and easy to work with, but upfront and transparent, leaving out any guesswork and not stringing me along. Responses and actions were prompt and accurate. I felt confident working with her in the past and she'll be my first call if needed in the future.

Megan assisted me in perhaps the hardest time of my life regarding my divorce and specifically my child custody battle. She was honest with me regarding my position in the case and what results I could expect. Her knowledge of child custody laws was vast and I felt that I was represented by a professional who could safely guide me through emotional muddy waters. I would recommend her to anyone who has to suffer thru a divorce, especially if there are children involved. Megan listened to my questions, calmed my fears and stayed in constant communication with me throughout the process. Rarely was I left wondering "what's next?". I consider my choice of her as my legal representation and council the correct one and feel that she truly cared about me and my case. On a lighter note.... I was impressed with her "yanking of the reigns" at times during my case. Most divorces are messy and emotional. There were times I had "fight" in me that would have cost me both financially and emotionally. This fight would have likely yielded unwanted results in the end. Megan was knowledgeable to see that and direct enough to stop me from proceeding down those paths. Thanks for saving me the stress (and the money) Megan. - Dan

In 2001 I was in a single vehicle roll over in someone else's vehicle and had a broken arm. I walked up Broadway in Alexandria looking for a lawyer to help me out since the Ins. company was trying to get me to claim under a family member's insurance instead of them. He was the only lawyer that met with me right away. He took care of everything. Any time the ins. company refused to pay their legal obligation he called and it was handled withing a couple of day. I would, and have recommended his services to numerous friends and family members.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Alexandria, Minnesota?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
