I couldn’t have asked for a better experience under less-than-ideal circumstances with worker’s compensation. Denise and Conrad were quick to respond when I had questions and explained every step very well. I contacted them after being jerked around by worker’s compensation insurance company for an injury. Denise helped me get more treatment that improved my injury and negotiated a good settlement. I would recommend them to anyone and would use them again in heartbeat!

While handling my case Maria was incredibly professional. During every step of our interaction she kept clear and prompt communication . If I had any questions she would either call me, email me, or she would find time for me to meet with her even with an already busy schedule. I have nothing but good things to say about Maria. If you have any questions about Immigration or Criminal Defense I would highly recommend you give her a call.

I had a very complicated case that i presented to Maria Miller. Maria Miller was not phased by the case she was confident that she would do everything possible to work it out and provide the best outcome. My case had a criminal element that deterred other lawyers, but Maria took it on and not only got me the outcome we went for and more. She is professional, courteous and truly cares about the clients. Maria is a lawyer that i would recommend to everyone i know. And i am blessed to have her as my attorney. She is always there to assist and to to put you at ease about this rather confusing legal process. Thank you very much Maria Miller.

My husband and I were introduced to Martin Law through a family referral and as a result we met and began working with Maria Miller (Trafton). Our immigration case was incredibly complicated, and Maria was always willing to talk through our options. Going it alone was not a possibility, and my husband and I were grateful to have Maria help guide us. With different angles to consider, and because I’m an individual that likes to understand things step by step, Maria was always willing to break things down for us. Because our case was so complex, it was easy to feel overwhelmed. However, following many different hurdles and law changes, and nearly 5 years of waiting, my husband now has his US permanent residency. Maria was essential in gaining this. She encouraged us to have patience and empathized with us when things were at a standstill. She was thorough through each petition or waiver. She read each statement and gave ideas of how to make it better. She was willing to go the extra mile. Beyond this, she is responsive, very responsive. If I had a question, I knew I could ask her and get my answer. Knowing we had her in on our side gave us both peace of mind. As mentioned, our case was complicated and required incredible attention to detail, and Maria never missed a beat. During and since the end of our lengthy immigration process, we’ve referred friends and family to Maria, and we’ll continue to do so. The immigration system can at times resemble a maze and having Maria navigate as your lawyer will be to your advantage. We highly recommend Maria Miller for your immigration needs.

Working with R. Breitman on my case for over 10 years period I become very familiar with my attorney and his staff. He also helped all of my close friends in last 15 years. Combining his experience and knowledge of " the system" with organization skills and tech savvy of young paralegals works miracles - as I experienced by myself. Also helps that their office is in the same building as Immigration Service - makes them "insiders" of " the court" - they know most of INS employees in person. I would highly recommend R. Breitman to anyone seeking Immigration and Naturalization representation.

I heartily recommend John Fossum. He has both represented and advised us, on many occasions, concerning both corporate and personal issues. His advice comes from a position of both knowledge and compassion. Northfield is lucky to have such a fine lawyer here in town.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Bloomington, Minnesota?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
