We needed an attorney fast and were given Andrew’s information by a good friend. Andrew called me back within ten minutes of leaving my first voicemail and he provided us with immediate responses every time we reached out to him thereafter. He resolved our case quickly and saved us A LOT of money. Andrew is a really great guy - he was very personable and showed he actually cared about us and our situation.

Andrew did an excellent job. He is professional, courteous, highly knowledgeable of the law, and dedicated to his clients. He does not back down from a challenge or a fight. And he finds a way to win. That is everything I would ever want from a lawyer!

Andrew is an attorney deserving of high marks, he met with me to review my case, laid out a basic outline of defense, did all his homework, went to court on my behalf, and the best part.... WON!! He was punctual, delivered what he said he could do, called when he said he would call. He is worth every dollar I spent. I highly, highly recommend him to anyone needing a smart, articulate, go get em attorney. I keep him retained just in case. Best attorney i've had!

Due to family issues I have unfortunately needed to contact and work with different attorneys over the years. I reached out to Micaela for a child custody matter. A minor child, who was a relative, was being abused and I needed legal advice and potentially an attorney. I am very happy I reached out to Micaela. In my first face to face meeting with Micaela I could tell something was different. She didn't just listen for key words or phrases. Micaela asked questions that demonstrated she was genuinely concerned. After the initial consultation I knew I wanted to hire her. During the family court process, Micaela was honest about what to expect and what actions were needed. Many times I would express frustrations with government officials, and sometimes the system. Micaela was always able to help me put thing into perspective. Working with Micaela I felt like I had a genuine advocate. She wasn't just an attorney I hired to help get a family member out of danger, she felt like a genuine partner. She always kept me informed about each step along the way. Micaela and her team were also very prepared when anything needed to be filed. Before any court appearances or filings, Micaela explained what motion was going to be filed and why. When I would ask questions about the judge, or the proceedings, or any other legal matter, Micaela was ready with an answer, or she would always get back to me in a timely manner. I appreciated her humility and honesty. The qualities I appreciated most about Micaela were - 1 - her honesty - she was upfront about expectations 2 - her humility - she was not afraid to acknowledge her own limitations 3 - her preparation - she always had a plan B (and sometimes C) and she always explained my options. Knowing she was prepared gave me confidence in court. 4 - communication - her office was quick to respond and open 5 - genuine - I felt like she genuinely cared about my case. 6 - tenacity - I felt good knowing I have a "bulldog" on my side. I felt comfortable hearing Micaela be my (and the minor child's) advocate. I felt as if she was fighting hard for the child's safety. I would hire Micaela again in a heartbeat. Hopefully I won't be in need of her services ever again. If I am ever in need of an attorney for child custody, Micaela will just be the first person I contact, she will be the only person I contact. I'm very thankful that Micaela was available when I needed her services.

I heartily recommend John Fossum. He has both represented and advised us, on many occasions, concerning both corporate and personal issues. His advice comes from a position of both knowledge and compassion. Northfield is lucky to have such a fine lawyer here in town.

While handling my case Maria was incredibly professional. During every step of our interaction she kept clear and prompt communication . If I had any questions she would either call me, email me, or she would find time for me to meet with her even with an already busy schedule. I have nothing but good things to say about Maria. If you have any questions about Immigration or Criminal Defense I would highly recommend you give her a call.

I had a very complicated case that i presented to Maria Miller. Maria Miller was not phased by the case she was confident that she would do everything possible to work it out and provide the best outcome. My case had a criminal element that deterred other lawyers, but Maria took it on and not only got me the outcome we went for and more. She is professional, courteous and truly cares about the clients. Maria is a lawyer that i would recommend to everyone i know. And i am blessed to have her as my attorney. She is always there to assist and to to put you at ease about this rather confusing legal process. Thank you very much Maria Miller.

My husband and I were introduced to Martin Law through a family referral and as a result we met and began working with Maria Miller (Trafton). Our immigration case was incredibly complicated, and Maria was always willing to talk through our options. Going it alone was not a possibility, and my husband and I were grateful to have Maria help guide us. With different angles to consider, and because I’m an individual that likes to understand things step by step, Maria was always willing to break things down for us. Because our case was so complex, it was easy to feel overwhelmed. However, following many different hurdles and law changes, and nearly 5 years of waiting, my husband now has his US permanent residency. Maria was essential in gaining this. She encouraged us to have patience and empathized with us when things were at a standstill. She was thorough through each petition or waiver. She read each statement and gave ideas of how to make it better. She was willing to go the extra mile. Beyond this, she is responsive, very responsive. If I had a question, I knew I could ask her and get my answer. Knowing we had her in on our side gave us both peace of mind. As mentioned, our case was complicated and required incredible attention to detail, and Maria never missed a beat. During and since the end of our lengthy immigration process, we’ve referred friends and family to Maria, and we’ll continue to do so. The immigration system can at times resemble a maze and having Maria navigate as your lawyer will be to your advantage. We highly recommend Maria Miller for your immigration needs.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Bloomington, Minnesota?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
