“Apparently everyone there is a friend of his-the judges, the lawyers, even the clerks and everyone wanted to chat with him. I felt like I was in the popular kids group at high school.”
Cons
1
Can be expensive, with some clients reporting that costs escalated quickly and their retainers were depleted faster than expected
“Don't walk. RUN! Be prepared to represent yourself, review and revise every word of your documents and have your retainer swallowed up quickly by unproductive visits, incidental emails and phone calls, and for him to "hire experts @ $5k" to come up with a protective clause which never makes it's way into your document.”
2
Some clients felt that their wishes and needs were not always prioritized, and that the lawyer pursued strategies that benefited himself more than the client
“Mr. Burns did not listen to my wishes as a client, and decided he would try and win something that was easier than what I wanted, which deducted from my retainer quickly.”

John was referred to me by a former classmate. John the lawyer, and Ben the paralegal were there for me going though a nasty divorce. They and the others in the office made you comfortable and feel at home. They were there every step of the way. John will do the best he can for you with truth and honesty.

This guy John Burns jr is a fraud and a joke. He claims he is for father’s rights on his website and more. Yet he rather help pad his pocket and help take a kid from a great father. Straight scum and any client should run from this liar. So many proven records to show and will expose him. Will be talking to the bar and showing you shouldn’t be a lawyer. Masquerading an an attorney for fathers rights. Yet you only take mostly women clients. I hope anyone take notice and run. Fathers deserve better.

I hired John Burns as my attorney because I was dealing with a very nasty custody case. This case took years, and if I'm honest it is still murk at times as most family custody cases are. The point is John walked me through the process every step of the way. And when there were times I couldn't see the bigger picture John reassured me that he had the legal knowledge to guide down the right path. In the end I could not be more pleased with his Law Firm. I owe my daughters safety to them. I have hired him multiple times through out this hectic process and each time he has delivered! Thank you to John Burns and your Team.

Liz filled in on my case when the attorney I had been working with for years was on maternity leave. I was reluctant to work with someone new because my case was cumbersome and overwhelming, but Liz far exceeded my expectations. My case was very emotional, as most family law cases are, and Liz offered compassion and integrity that I had not seen in the courtroom before. She is bold and detail orientated. Liz did a great amount of research for me on my case and I felt confident and calm with her representing me. She responds to emails and phone calls very quickly and has been very patient with me, taking the time to explain every step of the process in detail. Truly, I was proud to be represented by Liz in these matters, and without hesitation, I would recommend her to my closest friends and family. It is clear that Liz takes great pride in her work, and all throughout the process, I felt like she really cared about me and my family and the outcome for us all. Liz really went to bat for me.

I have been having a dispute with my contractor that was starting to feel hopeless to me, until I called Liz. I knew I needed help but had no idea what to do next. Liz has been very patient with me, explaining all my options and helping me to figure out the best way to resolve the issues. While my case is not finished yet, I now feel like I have a course of action and some control over my life again. I am confident that I chose the right person when I came to see Liz.

Hello, we started our estate and cabin trust planning with Carrie in September of 2023. We had our closing meeting last week and everything is now finalized. Carrie's preparation was very thorough, detail oriented and meticulaous. What was most impressive, we were not rushed to get this completed. During each meeting with Carrie, all areas were fully covered and explained to us in layman's terms. In addition, we received a fully orgainzed portfolio for our future reference. I would highly recommend Carrie for estate and cabin trust planning.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Burnsville, Minnesota?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
