I got a very good review from this firm and tried via the website, phone, and email to make contact with someone to begin the process of an initial consultation and was promised return phone calls on a couple of times, but they never came. Finally started calling through other offices in the area and reached one, had a consultation, and was moving forward before I ever heard back from them. I can not imagine counting on someone who has such poor communication.

Alexandra is not only an amazing attorney, she is an amazing human being. She was by my side from start to finish and her and her team were pleasant and amazing to work with. She really went above and beyond not only to fight for me but she was also very understanding and supportive during the difficult periods. She is also incredibly intelligent and she thinks of things most attorneys don't even consider. I know without a doubt that my divorce and custody cases would not have nearly as positive of an outcome without her. I highly recommend Alexandra Reynolds at Atticus Family Law!

I cannot overstate how happy my family has been with service from Alexandra Reynolds, Tiffani Richardson, and everyone at Atticus Family Law. From an initial inquiry with Missy Olson (so friendly, attentive and helpful) to our hired counsel, the experience has been as delightful as it can be within the tumult of a legal battle. Ms. Reynolds jumped into an ongoing struggle without missing a beat. She quickly gets up to speed even with years of history, acts at all times with professionalism and refreshing avidity, is in sync with her client at every step, and is quick to respond and act when you need her. She is exactly the kind of lawyer you want on your side, being both a protective, fervent advocate and also a voice of perspective. I wholeheartedly recommend Alexandra Reynolds and Atticus Family Law!

Alexandra Reynolds is an outstanding attorney and she did an incredible job handling my case. She applied the little tested Cohabitation Law to my alimony appeal and she nailed it. Her knowledge of the law and her professionalism gave me confidence throughout the entire process.

Topher did a wonderful job helping our young family begin the process of estate planning. He was efficient with his time and explained everything in great detail so my wife and I could easily understand all the documentation. Highly recommend.

As professional as we hoped. This being our first will, we needed a lot of guidance and information. Christopher took the time to explain all the "legaleze" in a plain manner which was easily understood. I would certainly suggest Christopher to anyone looking for an attorney for estate planning. Clear, plain speaking, stayed in communication, and produced document I am confident in - what else can you ask.

Christopher (known as Topher) was a great assistance to me during a difficult period. I was terminated from my job and was uncertain as to my rights. Topher as patient and helped me along every step of the way. More than that, Topher kept his professional cool when the other attorney was stooping to professional lows. I'd recommend Topher to anyone else in a similar situation!

My wife and I reside in Colorado but had a pressing need for assistance and review with a challenging intrafamily Minnesota real property sale. Sandy was referred to us by a Two Harbors realtor and all I can say, she exceeded every expectation! She was generous in her initial time, and super responsive in reviewing and turning around a custom purchase agreement. She answered questions promptly and found numerous errors or issues in proposed closing and title documents. I really can't imagine how we could have been more fortunate than to have worked with Sandy as real estate counsel. I have a legal background and have some sense of how working with counsel with such transactions work and all-too-often fails to work; she is a shining star! I enthusiastically endorse her.

As an attendee of a course on conciliation (25 April '24) led by Katie Schwandt, I came away extremely happy with not only the amount of ground she covered in a short period of time, but also the way she made time to make certain the material was helpful as well as understood. She was obviously enthusiastic about her subject and made potentially difficult to understand legal material very approachable. Highly recommend reaching out to her. Thanks so much Katie.

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Duluth, Minnesota?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
