Our family had a unique custody case that we were seeking help for. I called many firms in the area and they all made me feel like I was just a number. Cylkowski Law Office immediately reached out to me and gave me an honest and thorough consultation on what my options were and what my next steps looked like. We worked with Katherine for our matter and could not have asked for better partnership and representation. Katherine was EXTREMELY communicative and always available and accessible to us whenever we had questions or concerns. Every step of the way she was there to explain all the legal jargon, kept us in the loop, and always let us know what to expect and what was expected of us. Katherine expertly and compassionately guided us through this tough and scary process. We truly felt like we had representation that had our family's best interest at heart and went to bat for us to get the best outcome. Katherine is clearly well respected in her field, knows the family law system well, and is confident in her practice. We highly recommend Katherine at Cylkowski law.

By far the absolute WORST lawyer I have ever had to deal with. She "represented" my mom in my parents divorce. She went out of her way to drag myself and my sister (both in our 30s) into our parents divorce when it was absolutely not needed. She tried to rob myself of upwards of $20k by accusing myself and my father of being "in cahoots" together because I had a bank account set up by my dad YEARS ago, which he told them about going into the divorce (was a business bank account). I had to spend hours gathering information and have the displeasure of talking to Laurie on the phone to prove to her that the money in the account was mine and being used by me, I had hard facts and she still wouldn't let it go. She also went after my sister for money my dad "possibly" gave her to use towards her college tuition, because that is so uncommon for parents to do... She also is by far the most rude, disrespectful and unprofessional person I have ever met. I had to speak with her on the phone about the above bank account and told her I left about $20k in the bank account that has mine and my dads name on it to use as a savings for a down payment on a house. Her exact words to me were "that is not enough money for a down payment". Well sorry I can't scam my clients out of thousands of dollars like you Laurie to afford a million dollar house, but $20k to most people is way more then enough for a down payment (worked for me, I got approved with it for a house). People, there are a TON of other good qualified lawyers out there, ones that won't drag family members into a divorce that they have nothing to do with, especially kids, of any age. Do your research. Laurie has a HUGE REPUTATION of running the costs up on lawyer and legal fees to benefit herself. Ask any divorce lawyer in the metro and they will tell you the same thing about her, she wastes thousands of dollars to do nothing to benefit her clients. She wasted thousands of dollars of BOTH my parents money, to accomplish nothing. Long and short of it, if I could give her a negative star I would. She is horrible, condescending and the most unprofessional lawyer I have ever had to talk to. She did nothing to help either one of my parents, unfortunately my mom was not smart enough to realize this.

This is a great law firm. Abdifatah has been my trusted business lawyer and advisor since 2019. He understands my business well and is able to anticipate my needs even before I do. I would recommend Abdi Mohamed and the law firm of Mohamed Zain, LLP to any entrepreneur as they are responsive, affordable and deliver great service.

Kate up dated our wills, power of attorneys and health care directives. She was very easy to communicate with and we were comfortable to ask her anything! It was a seamless process and her fee was very fair. I would recommend her to anybody. You will not be disappointed!

Kate worked with my mother in the last years of my parents’ lives to set up a living trust for her, assist her with the heavy paperwork burden that was involved in moving my father into the Minnesota Veterans home, comforted me in my grief for them when they passed, and was extremely knowledgeable and efficient in selling my parents’ house and administering their estate. I am now working with her to get my own affairs in order, and I highly recommend her.

We came to work with Kate after a less than satisfactory encounter with another lawyer at her previous firm. That first meeting with Kate made us feel completely comfortable and we quickly forgot about the previous concerns. She was quick to satisfy our needs with nothing but grace and a smiling face. Our working together became a collaboration and we got our needs met in every way. I have since been able to get answers via email or a fast call for anything I have needed. We are so satisfied with Kate that we are following her to her own private practice and excited to continue our family legal needs for years to come.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Eagan, Minnesota?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
