I hired Rod Jensen on the recommendation of a friend of mine who had also gone through a divorce. He made a difficult process a lot better by handling the issues in a professional, calm manner. My ex's lawyer was pushing to go to trial (which would have made her a ton of money at our expense), but Rod knew that would be a waste of money in our case. He worked hard for us to settle the case with mediation. His associate is also very professional and pleasant to work with, and very mindful of the details of our case--she caught some important errors in the other lawyer's paperwork! If you are going through a separation or divorce, I cannot recommend Rod highly enough.

The moment I met with Rod, I knew I had found an attorney who cared. I had no idea about anything, as divorce was a word that was not in my vocabulary. But Rod patiently guided me through it all. I highly recommend him to anyone who must travel the road of divorce especially when children are involved.

I needed an attorney that could take on a high conflict individual and dreadfully unjust situation. I interviewed and consulted with many attorneys, based on research and recommendations. It was not until I consulted with Rod, that I knew instantly I had found the right attorney to protect me from what could have been a devastating outcome. Many attorneys would have shied away from the challenges and intricacies that accompanied my case, but Rod used it as fuel to refine his noteworthy expertise and better the lives of all those he will serve in the future. Rod is trustworthy, relatable, compassionate, knowledgable, and honest to a fault. Rod treated my case with the utmost care and concern, and always found time to provide direction and support despite his tireless schedule. Rod is highly respected by his colleagues and community, is a great communicator, and will go the extra mile to ensure an excellent outcome. Rod is far more than a great attorney, he is a great person with great integrity. I would highly recommend Rod Jensen for any case.

I was referred to Rod after issues with my first lawyer. Upon meeting Rod for the first time it was obvious that he was, and should have been, the first choice for me. My divorce was very difficult and long and I relied on Rod's experience and reputation in the proceedings. I found Rod to be understanding, compassionate, and very experienced. The advice and representation from Rod was truly first rate. In different proceedings that occurred during my divorce Rod was well known and very respected. He was able to obtain the best resolution possible in my situation. I continue to use Rod and recommend him.

It has been my pleasure to work with Rodney (Rod) Jensen several times in the past 19 years, with my most recent experience in early December 2019. He is the right combination of knowledge, compassion and integrity. Rod is very knowledgeable on the law necessary to resolve my issues, conscientious about my time as his client and therefore his charges. He and his staff were professional and empathetic. I highly recommend Mr. Jensen without reservation.

I used Mr. Martin's services last summer when I had an organization refuse to reimburse me for an item they had destroyed. The story kept changing and I couldn't get people to call me back. It was clear that they were purposely ignoring my legitimate concerns in hopes that I would get frustrated and give up without them having to reimburse me. Mr. Martin aptly handled my concerns and within a matter of days I had received my reimbursement. His concern for his clients, knowledge of the law and ethical approach makes him a good choice as a lawyer. It is without hesitation that I recommend Graham Martin to represent you in your legal dispute.

Graham researched some copyright questions for my company and was extremely helpful and thorough in his research. Not only did he detail his findings in a cover letter, he included the actual research in a PDF document for me to keep for reference. He is very professional, reliable, hard-working, and friendly. Graham is eager to answer any questions and keeps his clients informed throughout the entire process. I definitely recommend Graham's legal services.

Recently had a custody and child support battle with the mother of my nine year old daughter. As biased as Minnesota Courts are against fathers, I went into this battle very discouraged already. Derk Schweiger was amazing in court, and I felt that because of his professional demeanor, articulateness, and sheer brilliance in court, the judge was able to see where I was coming from, and my life situation, my desire to better myself as a man, and my desire to be a father. The judgment was more than fair, and I was very happy that I chose Derk to be my lawyer. I have referred him to several people, and if need be, I will definitely call upon him again. He was professional, organized, clever, and not as expensive as other lawyers in the metro area. Thanks again! -Ryan Wagner

Joel asked a significant number of questions, then listened to our answers. He would then ask clarifying questions, both to make sure he knew our needs and wants, but also to help us to understand the reasons for his questions. When we asked him questions, he supported his answers with appropriate and relevant examples. He was patient and did not "talk down" to us but rather wanted us to understand completely. Our family is very satisfied, comfortable, and confident with the results or our work with Joel.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Edina, Minnesota?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
