Amy provided diligent and effective representation. Not only is she knowledgeable and experienced, she actively listened to all my concerns to address each circumstance thoroughly; while keeping my best interests in mind. She is attentive to detail, communicative and provided excellent guidance along the way. As a result of my experience, and my confidence in her from that, I would recommend Amy to anyone seeking an attorney with her skill set.

Amy Sauter and her firm handled my case for spousal support adjustment. Her and her team were very easy to work with, especially during these difficult times. In what seems to be a dog eat dog world, Amy is what every lawyer should be. She's professional, intelligent and knowledgeable. (And yes, I believe intelligence and knowledge are two completely different entities that are a rarity to find in any one person.) From day one she has always had my sons and my best interest at heart. She's picked up where others could have let the ball drop. I truly believe she is our unicorn, that once in a life time person that is going to make a difference for the better in my family's life. It is more than comforting knowing she is the one that is representing us. I will continue to work with Amy far beyond our current family law case and would turn to her for any legal need that may ever arise in the future.

Amy is an excellent attorney. I have never felt more comfortable going to anyone with my issues. I know I can email her whenever I have an issue and she will answer as soon as she can. She has helped me with everything possible in my case. If I am out of line with what I am asking she is sure to tell me and make sure I don't over step my boundaries in the case. She is an amazing attorney and I would recommend her to anyone. I couldn't have asked for someone better to represent me and help me with my case.

Andrew was extremely helpful in assisting with an old divorce matter. He came highly recommended by a friend of mine, and I was not disappointed. He was professional and personable. He walked me through the process. He always kept me in the loop. I would absolutely recommend him to anyone! His paralegals were also very helpful, kind, and empathetic. They made this process as smooth as possible, and I cannot tell you how much appreciate every single one of them. Thank you

Not knowing what the next step was, I was recommended to Mark. He was great at helping me understand the process along with detailing what certain terms meant and really helped me navigate what was best for MY family. I tell all my friends about him ...

When I got charged, I feel like I talked to every attorney in Southern Minnesota. Mark was patient from the beginning and was completely open about his fees and his thoughts on the legal process that I would face. I hired him and it was the best decision I made. He found problems with the case that I would have never known about. When there were things that I didn't understand, he took the time to walk me through the explanation. I always appreciated that he wasn't afraid to give me "bad news." Fortunately, he was also able to give me great news when all the charges I was facing were dismissed after a hearing where Mark argued that the charges violated my rights.

My case is finally complete and the history wiped clean. Mark was great and kept me calm throughout a horrible ordeal. Walked me through my options and fought for a good deal. Couldn't have asked for more and would definately contact him again should the need arise.

From the very initial contact I had with Andy I felt very comfortable and at ease having him represent me in my divorce. Andy spent a great deal of time, listening and understanding my situation and was extremely diligent in every aspect of the divorce. He was not only focused, but also very compassionate to my situation and needs and always maintained an open line of communication between he and I. The divorce took over a year to finalize simply due to stall tactics from the opposing council, I would communicate with Andy expressing my concerns and nervousness. Andy would always respond with a reassuring “I’ve got you” and he always did have my back. His professionalism and understanding As well as his compassion are unsurpassed. I was even fortunate enough to witness a little bit of a “pitbull“ show up. Andy again, I cannot thank you enough for representing me and for all of the in-depth and extreme work that you did. Thank you for “having my back“ I would quickly and honestly refer you to anyone who would ask for legal assistance. Duane

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Mankato, Minnesota?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
