John Buchholz is a great attorney. We researched several attorneys in the Twin Cities with a background in working with LGBTQ families and John stood out to us. We really appreciated that he specializes in this area and is involved in advocacy for LGBTQ rights. Throughout the process of working with him, John was always compassionate and thorough, and we felt that we benefited from his vast knowledge of the legal hoops same-sex couples must go through to grow their families. The first time we met John, we talked to him about our what we were looking for and he took the time to answer all of our questions thoughtfully and sensitively. He explained step-by-step what it takes to create a donor agreement and as well as the second parent adoption process. The first part of our process involved coordinating with another lawyer from out of state who was a bit difficult to get a hold of. John handled this with professionalism and persistence; we really felt that we were in good hands. We were so pleased with this experience that we decided to continue working with him for our estate planning as well. After the birth of our child, John came to our home so we didn't have to deal with bringing our newborn to sign paperwork. When our second-parent adoption was complete, it was a truly joyous occasion and we are so grateful to John for guiding us through the process.

From the first conversation, it was apparent that he had a strong understanding of adoption law. He answered all of my questions and laid out the process in clear and easy to understand language. His fees are very straightforward and reasonable. Once we were officially working with him, he always responded quickly to phone calls/emails and kept the process moving while also respecting our communication and situation with our baby's birth family. John Buchholz is an excellent lawyer. He made sure that the process for both of our second-parent adoptions (2 kids, 2 years apart) was as smooth as possible. He also completed our wills and power of attorney documents and we are very happy with them. Each time we spoke with him over the phone or in person he answered all of our questions and explained all of the legal jargon thoroughly. He is very knowledgeable, especially about how the law pertains to same-sex families, like ours, and other queer families. John is also personable. It's apparently that he loves helping families get the legal protections they need. He even came to the hospital when both of our children were born so we could sign the adoption paperwork and get it submitted to the courts that same day. (We didn't want any delay in the adoption on our part.) John also doesn't have hidden fees. He is honest and upfront about costs, which are reasonable. My partner and I would recommend John to anyone needing a good lawyer.
