Michael Davis and his team are professionals who get the job done! I would highly recommend him. Michael and one of his Assistants, Rosa Gaona, helped my husband and I with a somewhat difficult immigration case. It was a long and arduous process that once got denied, but then finally ended up in our favor. Along the way, his team provided feedback and alternate resources to me during this difficult process. At times I felt desperate, so this was very helpful. I know they work hard to ensure their clients are taken care of. I'd say one thing that differentiates Michael from any other lawyer is that he's no-nonsense. He'll tell you the truth and that's exactly what you need to hear. Many lawyers may only take your case for the money. I did not feel that way with Michael Davis. He'll take a case to win! I believe he likes a challenge too. Don't get me wrong, I myself had to work very hard and gather all sorts of information and documentation for our case. But his team pushed me and followed up to make sure we were prepared for the best possible outcome. They prepared all of the information in a very neat, professional and concise package. I couldn't have asked for more.

Michael has been helping me and my partner with several immigration issues, including finding a way for my partner to be re-admitted to the U.S. despite his J-1 waiver, 'sexual orientation-based' asylum and residency application. By far and large, Michael is the most trustworthy and experienced attorney in the Twin Cities metro and beyond. He is professional, resourceful, honest and effective. Michael is the remedy for all of those who've been scathed in their experiences with 'deceptively helpful' attorneys. His breadth of experience and frankness in approach will get you where you need to be in your immigration pursuits. Michael will tell you the reality of your case and will come up with the best solution that is available to you. He is NOT afraid of difficult cases, to the contrary, his flair for challenge and drive to achieve his clients' goals propel him to work on his clients' cases as if they were of his own. Until we started working with Michael, we had never thought we would encounter an attorney who was worth every minute and every dollar we spend. We continue working with him as we finalize our permanent residency. Just like in our case, we got tangled in immigration laws, dealing with a plethora of attorneys of whom many were not as good as they purportedly were and made dealing with the Immigration Service ever more difficult. Michael met us at a point where we thought there was no hope for us. My partner was stuck in another country, I was spending tens of thousands of dollars on living and travel between two homes, and the possibility of my partner being reunited with me seemed bleak. Michael saved my partner and me from being permanently separated by finding a way for him to be re-admitted. Then, he and his attorney Rosa worked on my partner's asylum case, which, as far as I know, had never been attempted before in Minnesota. Thanks to the depth of their knowledge and genuine sensitiveness to our unique circumstances, they built up a well-substantiated and grounded case. My partner received approval and is now allowed to live with me in the U.S. We owe Michael and Rosa our present and our future. If you're out there looking for someone in whom you can confide and need to put the power of one of the most distinguished attorneys to work for your immigration situation, no matter how complicated, please give Michael a call. You'll never regret it. Most likely, it will be the most important call of your life. It WAS ours! SINCEREST THANK-YOU to both Michael and Rosa for all your hard work, emotional support and expertise that resulted in my partner and me being reunited to live together!

Unbelievable Professional, Honest, Caring service. Our I-601 Waiver was Approved!!! I have not had good experience with a past Immigration Lawyer so I truly know the difference between determination and a willingness to help without being nickled and dimed everytime you turn your head. With Michael Davis and his Paralegal Rosa you get the service you deserve and expect from a Immigration Lawyer. I highly recommend Michael H. Davis for all your Immigration needs.

I am an independent contractor - commissioned sales rep - and wanted advice about choice of law and where would be the best location to file a lawsuit for unpaid commissions. Craig helped me by analyzing my potential claim and the applicabilty of Minnesota laws to my case. Specifically, he addressed the Minnesota Termination of Sales Representatives Act and Minnesota Statutes 181.145 as it might apply to a contractor not located in or having territory including Minnesota (the company not paying commissions is located in MN). He was able to boild down a stack of paperwork to the most important details in a very short period of time. Craig was honest, clear, puctual and truly had my best interests in mind during our meetings. The entire staff, especially Kelly Fiege, were very helpful and supportive. I recommend Craig for any contract or commision related dispute that a person may have.

I consider calling Craig Trepanier to represent me to be one of the best decisions I have made. Craig Trepanier and Mike McCain completely immersed themselves in the intricacies of my case and worked tirelessly to achieve a favorable outcome. They were sensitive to the fact that I had limited resources available with which to defend myself, and always gave candid, sound advice about how best to use those resources. In the course of my legal case I quickly learned that there is a huge range in the quality of representation provided by different employment law firms. I absolutely recommend Trepanier & MacGillis to anyone involved in an employment law dispute.

Over the 13 years I’ve known and worked with Elliot, I have come to understand his passion for the practice of law and unique/difficult personal injury cases. He is energized to learn new things in order to fully understand the intricacies of a case. He is intelligent, organized, down to earth, compassionate and extremely kind. Because I have the utmost trust in him, I have referred several people to Elliot over the years and if the day comes that I need him, he’ll be my only call.

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Minneapolis, Minnesota?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
