I was referred to Elaine to obtain legal help after my young son was taken-- internationally and wrongully retained. She discussed the Hague Convention, passport(s), immigration issues and consequences, and also worked with my family law attorney. Thanks to her efforts, I have my young son back in the United States, and I will have my rights to see him grow up. She understood, focused and kept on track with what the goals would be and how to accomplish them.

I had Elaine as a lawyer for a quite bit time now working on my Asylum case. The experience we had from our case wasn't usual . It was very competitive, stressful for her and me , full of surprise and sometimes full of negative answers but most of all something new for me because it was my first case . Elaine was there when i needed her all the time on time.she even made me smile by her joke to make me comfortable. She is a pretty good , experimented, focus , loyal and the honest person i have never seen in my life since i am here. For that i am thankful to her and admire her sens of humanity because she put people first and not money first even if we all know she get paid for what she is working on. she is open, friendly , helpful , reliable , a hard worker but most of all she got a great heart . i will have a lot more to say but not enough space so i cut in the throat now .Just to say that she helped me stay in the usa while there were trouble in my country and left my parents and siblings home between threats, fear, violence even death. Today was my trial date and a miracle happened again due of all the support , her assistance as a lawyer and her extremely faith . I have been granted for 3 years of staying+ a employment authorization from the judge . I am very blessed to have her as a lawyer and recommend her . i remember she told me before we went to court to pray and made me prepare correctly so i won't be nervous, she believed in me i did believe in her too and God help us go through the storm . Now the storm is over. Thank you Elaine may God bless you more and your life . For all person out there who may need her help just know that this job as any job is not easy specially when you have people lives in your hand as a lawyer , a life to live by yourself with your obligations so you have to be thankful and do all you can to help the lawyer back since she helped you first ( I saw her hard working so i know)

Elaine helped us process a marriage green card case two years ago. When we met her for an initial consultation, we immediately noticed that she was very knowledgeable and experienced about the entire process. Her professionalism and courtesy was extended throughout the process and she treated our case as if it was her own. Even though she did not have to, she showed up to our court date and prepped us before the interview. She knew all of the tips to get the case processed quickly and efficiently. Elaine even called us two years after she handled our case to remind us to file paperwork to lift the condition on the green card! Elaine is a very responsive, professional, and reliable lawyer. I would definitely use her again and would recommend others to as well!!

I contacted this lawyer one year ago about my case which got stuck in process for about three year. I called her to explain to her what my situation was and she agreed to meet me in my own town. We met and went over all the paperwork, she told me what will be the process and we went from there. She took the case like it was her own, sends email after email, and figure out why the case was stuck and was able to get me an interview with a new inspector. We went over the entire possible question the day before the interview and met at the immigration center the next day. Yes she was in time, most of them are not. My case was approved right at the spot.

I am an independent contractor - commissioned sales rep - and wanted advice about choice of law and where would be the best location to file a lawsuit for unpaid commissions. Craig helped me by analyzing my potential claim and the applicabilty of Minnesota laws to my case. Specifically, he addressed the Minnesota Termination of Sales Representatives Act and Minnesota Statutes 181.145 as it might apply to a contractor not located in or having territory including Minnesota (the company not paying commissions is located in MN). He was able to boild down a stack of paperwork to the most important details in a very short period of time. Craig was honest, clear, puctual and truly had my best interests in mind during our meetings. The entire staff, especially Kelly Fiege, were very helpful and supportive. I recommend Craig for any contract or commision related dispute that a person may have.

I consider calling Craig Trepanier to represent me to be one of the best decisions I have made. Craig Trepanier and Mike McCain completely immersed themselves in the intricacies of my case and worked tirelessly to achieve a favorable outcome. They were sensitive to the fact that I had limited resources available with which to defend myself, and always gave candid, sound advice about how best to use those resources. In the course of my legal case I quickly learned that there is a huge range in the quality of representation provided by different employment law firms. I absolutely recommend Trepanier & MacGillis to anyone involved in an employment law dispute.

Over the 13 years I’ve known and worked with Elliot, I have come to understand his passion for the practice of law and unique/difficult personal injury cases. He is energized to learn new things in order to fully understand the intricacies of a case. He is intelligent, organized, down to earth, compassionate and extremely kind. Because I have the utmost trust in him, I have referred several people to Elliot over the years and if the day comes that I need him, he’ll be my only call.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Minneapolis, Minnesota?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
