I was exceptionally fortunate to have Valerie Arnold represent me during an extremely complex international separation and custody case dealing with challenging jurisdictional issues. The favorable outcome that the court ordered exemplified the knowledge, empathy, and determination that Valerie demonstrated to me since the first day. She went above and beyond to educate me on the process, explain in simple terms some legal theories that could be applied, and even used her French language abilities to hold consultations and establish a path forward. As the legal Motions were set in play, Valerie was equally determined to ensure that I have quality time with my kids who were wrongly removed from me as their father. Valerie was prompt to respond during a weekend visitation with my kids to quickly establish a supervision service so that I could spend additional time with my kids. Separation from my kids and divorce has been the most difficult time of my life and I am forever grateful for Valerie and her firm’s tireless and meticulous efforts to seek out justice, restore my parental rights, and obtain the favorable court ordered outcome. I enthusiastically recommend Valerie Arnold and her firm without hesitation.

Valerie´s international competence and experience was vital. She dedicated time to understand all cultural and personal particularities at hand. Valerie was always available, regardless of continental time differences. She acts with integrity and commitment. Valerie genuinely knows and cares about the impact a divorce has on one’s children an always helps with recommendations and finding positive solutions. I could not have wished for a better attorney to support me through this situation. I recommend Valerie with highest respect and appreciation!

My international divorce was too much for the first attorney I hired. The case was complex involving European and US divorce laws, procedures and jurisdictions. Fortunately, I found Valerie Arnold. Valerie is very competent. She has an international practice and her Hague Convention experience was relevant to my case. She can handle the extra ambiguity associated with divorce proceedings in two countries. Valerie developed the case strategy for both jurisdictions with the support of a local attorney in Europe. She helped me to seek the most appropriate jurisdiction for each subject in my case. Valerie has a well- organized and responsive supporting team. They were a pleasure to work with during a stressful process. I highly recommend Valerie Arnold.

I would highly recommend Valerie Arnold’s legal services if you have the misfortune of divorcing a personality-disordered individual and/or have found yourself in a "high conflict" intractable divorce. Until I hired Valerie, I didn’t think it would be possible to have any calm and peace of mind until my children aged out of the family court system; my ex exploited the family court system to maintain control over my children and I and kept us under constant attack. Unlike my prior attorneys, Valerie very much understands these personalities/abusers and the gaps in family court which they exploit to maintain control over, and presence in the, the lives of their victims. For the first time, I felt my children and I had hope and could be protected. I can’t say enough wonderful things about Valerie and her tremendous skill set. Valerie has integrity (I know, a word not often associated with lawyers!), she is extremely talented, she is articulate and well-spoken, she is able to understand and distill complex fact patterns and communicate them to court and court personnel in an understandable manner (wading through all the smoke and mirrors and getting to the essence of the problem), she is trauma-informed, and her heart and focus are in the right place: making sure to the best of her ability that your children can emerge unscathed, healthy and appropriately and well-taken care of. It takes a very special lawyer to handle and manage these horrendous divorce/post-divorce situations and Valerie is such an attorney. (I'd give her far more than 5 stars if it were possible, she is simply on a different--and much higher--scale than any other attorney I've worked with.)

I am an independent contractor - commissioned sales rep - and wanted advice about choice of law and where would be the best location to file a lawsuit for unpaid commissions. Craig helped me by analyzing my potential claim and the applicabilty of Minnesota laws to my case. Specifically, he addressed the Minnesota Termination of Sales Representatives Act and Minnesota Statutes 181.145 as it might apply to a contractor not located in or having territory including Minnesota (the company not paying commissions is located in MN). He was able to boild down a stack of paperwork to the most important details in a very short period of time. Craig was honest, clear, puctual and truly had my best interests in mind during our meetings. The entire staff, especially Kelly Fiege, were very helpful and supportive. I recommend Craig for any contract or commision related dispute that a person may have.

I consider calling Craig Trepanier to represent me to be one of the best decisions I have made. Craig Trepanier and Mike McCain completely immersed themselves in the intricacies of my case and worked tirelessly to achieve a favorable outcome. They were sensitive to the fact that I had limited resources available with which to defend myself, and always gave candid, sound advice about how best to use those resources. In the course of my legal case I quickly learned that there is a huge range in the quality of representation provided by different employment law firms. I absolutely recommend Trepanier & MacGillis to anyone involved in an employment law dispute.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Minneapolis, Minnesota?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
