Katherine was thorough and did a good job. It was not just us going in and having a wandering discussion about what we wanted to do. She did a really good job of driving the discussion home and putting things out there so we could absorb it and react in the way we wanted to. She’s also very good at follow up, accountability and really having the discipline in terms of how the process went.

Katherine was a joy to work with. She was a great find and we were very fortunate. She knocked the ball out of the park. The experience was easy, pleasant, and non-intimidating. She didn’t put us on the clock and was very flexible. Overall a great experience. I would definitely call them back as a first point of contact for any legal needs I have. If they couldn’t meet my needs I would completely trust their recommendation.

I recently moved back to Minneapolis because my mother has been dealing with an illness that we just found out is terminal. Upon finding out that she had not written her will or health directive I immediately got some references from a friend who is a lawyer however, this issue is not his specialty. Third call on the list I got to speak to Katherine live, no leaving messages and waiting. I made an appointment for my mother to meet her and have a consult and we both left her office feeling like the greatest weight had been lifted. We immediately knew we were in good hands and that we could cross this task off our list. Katherine is more than we ever expected, very efficient and knowledgeable. She was courteous, respectful and so kind when addressing my mother with sensitive questions and extremely patient when we didn't understand the process. I could tell by my mother's face that she was really happy and this was a much easier process than she imagined because of Katherine's professionalism and enthusiastic manner, it was obvious that she was there to do the best job possible for us and she really enjoys her profession. We would absolutely recommend Katherine, no question. In fact my husband and I will be seeing her for our own future planning. I count this as one of my mother's good days. My mother thanked me and said I did a good job but all I did was have some really good luck on that third phone call.

My experience with the firm was convenient and painless. They’re friendly, knowledgeable, and they worked with my insurance company. I had legal coverage through work. There are probably 15 law firms in the Twin Cities that offered the services I needed. Most of them were either very poorly reviewed or not reviewed at all. Jeffrey P. Scott & Associates was the exception. Katherine was great at being incredibly responsive and proactive with reminders. She was also extremely accommodating to my schedule.

We had legal documentation that we needed to sign. We wanted to consult a lawyer first before making legal decisions. I felt Katherine went above what she needed to. She addressed all questions in detail and was very thorough. She was very responsive. I felt she was a subject matter expert. Any questions we had she was able to address without delay or waiting period. She was very respectful of our situation. She really understood the processes to have all of our documentation updated. I experienced what I was expecting, which is world class customer service. She was very personable at times where she needed to be. She was very warm and open. She was very proactive in her approach. She entertained various scenarios and determined what the best outcome would be. She was patient and took the time to go through all my questions. She was able to address everything in the first meeting, which I think is great coming from the world of customer service.

I worked with Lesley Guyton for my wife's permanent residency application (marriage to a permanent resident). Due to the recent Covid restrictions our case unexpectedly became complex. However, Lesley was thoroughly professional, knowledgeable and helped us at every step. In the end, everything worked out well and my wife was successful in obtaining the green card without any RFEs or hiccups. Personally, Lesley is a great and a kind hearted person and really cares about the case unlike other immigration firms out in the city interested in the case just for monetary reasons. Those firms in the city will not hesitate to charge you extra whenever they can. I would highly recommend Lesley and her firm for immigration needs.

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Saint Paul, Minnesota?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
