Couldn't be more happy with Mr. Laver. What was supposed to be a simple custody agreement turned into an ugly battle. Mr. Laver mostly handles Bankruptcy cases, however, he did not back down when things got tough for me and really helped me through the stressful time. He spent extra time getting prepared and was ready to go the extra mile for me. Many times he would call just to check in and see how i was doing. The ex found an attorney that demanded and thought she ran the show (similar personalities) and Mr. Laver did not let her get away with anything and never caved. He will continue to be my attorney for as long as he practices. He is personable, cared about my situation, put in extra work, and we even won the case. I recommend him 100%.

First - he tried to convince me my lawsuit was not an asset in bankruptcy. If I believed him, I'd be in prison today. Second - he neglected to reaffirm my second mortgage, placing a $60 thousand lean on my home and ruining my credit opportunities. Then - - I learned this past week he neglected to file papers to reaffirm the mortgage on my HOME - - causing the credit bureaus to ignore my excellent, and rapidly repaired credit. I approached him many times with the opportunity to repair and redo his mistakes - - and he was only abusive to me. Run from this man. Run, run, run.

We first went to a large firm you see on TV but we felt a bit lost in the shuffle and like a number and was not able to speak to the attorney. We hired Mr. Laver because he was a small firm and we could talk directly to him. His price was also very competitive. We did our homework and look him up on the state bar site. He did not have any red marks against him. We were surprised how may lawyer are out there still practicing and have major complaints against them. We checked to see if he belonged to the NACBA. That is the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys. Most of the top firms belong to this group because they give the attorney up dated information on cases on what is happening in their area. He is a member. Mr. Laver offered free consultations so he could can review our situation in detail and determine whether he could help us. We felt confident that he was experienced, and felt comfortable with him representing us. We hope we never had to go through this again but if we did, we would use his services. About 6 months later we refinanced a home and needed some information. We gave him a call and he was glad to give us the information we needed without charging us.

Jenna worked diligently during my whole process. She listens and guides the client through the process. She explains the process and is honest as to the outcome. She is well connected as to individuals who will end up working with your family after the legal process is completed. I was very pleased with the final outcome. I would recommend her for assisting you through what I am sure is a difficult time. Just as it was for myself.

*Revised October 2019* I ended up retaining Ms. Lutz again in July 2019. Yet again Ms. Lutz fiercely advocated for the best interest of my family and I. Ms. Lutz gave a very accurate, tenacious, passionate pleading to our Judge that resulted in the legal matter being ruled in my favor. Ms. Lutz presented a complex case and was able to passionately advocate on my families behalf. I was overly pleased with her legal knowledge and ability to put such a complex case together so precise. I will continue to retain Ms. Lutz on all of my legal matters in the future as well as reccomend her to others in need of superb legal matters. If you are looking for a knowledgeable, passionate, tenacious advocate for your legal matter, I highly recommend Ms. Lutz.

I first came to Ms. Jacquelyn Lutz of Appelhoff, Pfeifer and Hart in October of 2016. It was definitely the worst time in my life and she compassionately spoke with me about my options. Ms. Lutz thoroughly explained the laws, statutes, process and what to expect going forward. What was supposed to be one case, turned into three intricate cases that took a huge toll on me and my family. Ms. Lutz represented me in court on all three cases with a vast knowledge of the laws and how to proceed accordingly. During all three cases she kept me informed, calm, gave me resources to utilize, and (most important) gave me a realistic view of what may come next. Ms. Lutz knew each case required a great deal of knowledge and creative thinking on how to legally proceed forward with each case. My family and friends are forever grateful for the amazing representation by Ms. Lutz. I highly recommend Ms. Lutz for anyone needing or considering superb representation for any kind of family law.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?

  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Woodbury, Minnesota?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
