First let me start by saying, Susan is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING, not only as an attorney, but as a person! Like most people, I never thought I would need an attorney for anything. Already feeling like the odds were against me being a father fighting for child custody in my divorce, I was extremely worried that my first experience with an attorney would be a bad one and this was NOT a case where i could afford to have an "okay" attorney. After doing some research on attorneys with great experience in Family Law, I felt a glimmer of hope when I came across Susan and saw that she also fought for Father's Rights. Unlike other attorneys, when I reached out to her she got back to me in a reasonable amount of time. After she heard my case in my initial consultation, I KNEW she was the attorney for me! She was professional, yet very compassionate as well. It felt like I was talking to a friend I've known for a while. I can talk all day about how great she is as a person. But as an attorney, she's a POWERHOUSE! She's a very sweet person, but she's definitely not a pushover and will fight for you til the end! Susan is very well known and respected in Columbus and other locations of her work. She was very informative in my case and looked out for the kids and my best interest. One of the things I favor most is that she was immediately responsive to my questions and concerns at all times of the day! And when times are as stressful as these, sometimes all you really want to do is get answers and get everything done as quick as possible. Susan consistently put me at ease with any concerns I've had and handled every situation with grace and class. I'd also like to add, that out of all the times we spoke on the phone, exchanged texts, emailed, etc, she only brought up payment 1 time in our initial consultation and never again until the end. She was more focused on getting everything in my case squared away, which made me very comfortable and confident in the services she was providing me. In the end, I feel she was worth WAAAAY more than I paid. She literally goes above and beyond and get things done QUICK! She ended up getting me full physical and legal custody of my kids until my divorce is filed or annulled. With divorce attorneys I know that ppl say "dont expect to go into it getting everything you want." But honestly, Susan gave me exactly what i wanted. I was expecting a divorce, but honestly I wanted a chance to save my marriage without the risk of my kids being taken from me. And Susan did that for me.. Definitely an A+ Attorney. Thank you again Susan for caring for your craft and your clients the way you do!

I simply cannot begin to express to you, what a tremendous attorney Susan Culpepper is! If you’re headed into a legal battle, I can assure you, you would do no better than to have Ms Culpepper as your champion! She does not acquiesce to anyone! She is there to strongly defend her client, and present the most comprehensive and compelling case one could imagine. She prepares to win, period! Her communication skills are excellent! I assure you, between phone calls and text, with Ms Culpepper, you will always be able to reach your attorney. Always! As for costs, you will find Ms Culpepper very reasonable! I have the utmost respect and admiration for this highly skilled attorney!

The man is absolute genious. He understands the law and has no problem with hard work. Make no mistake, Mr. Bennett will represent with compassion. Mr. Bennett fought a DUI Case for me in which two attorneys with over 20 years experience advised me to take a plea agreement. And what is most interesting in this case, the DUI was his first. To reiterate, where other's would have been happy to take my money and have me plea, Mr. Bennett made a strong case that resulted in a win. He is driven and caring and worth the call when in need.

Mrs. Ida Henley helped me out tremendously after my wreck dealing with the legal side. Before having her as my attorney I was dealing with recovering from my car accident and doctors appointment, but I was also stressing about getting the money I deserved to be able to heal and recover from my accident. She made it incredibly easy and took a huge weight off my shoulders. I didn’t have to worry about a thing! She was on top of everything from contacting the insurance companies to contacting to other driver’s attorney. She handled everything so fast and stayed on top of getting me settled. She made sure to try every avenue before settling against the other driver’s attorney. I’m truly grateful to have had her during these hard times. She was everything I needed from an attorney and more!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Gulfport, Mississippi?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
