Great great experience at AW Law Firm. The staff really treats you like family. Their communication skills are far and above any lawyer I’ve ever dealt with. When I email them or call them they email me back within minutes usually. And they always call back the same day. When filing a claim they always look out for the best interest of the client. And they are very very aggressive in my opinion. They don’t just settle to just settle. They work hard for the client. Thank You AW Law Firm.

I n all my years, I have never brought a personal injury suit against anyone, but I was unavoidably injured by a distracted driver who knew better, and who tried to shift blame to me despite the fact that it was a busy intersection at rush hour and there were many witnesses. I have seen many specialists for help to improve the injuries and resulting pain I’ve experienced as a result, but have little hope of significantly restoring mobility or strength. I do realize that I have been fortunate to have had the kind and experienced people at A.W.Smith Law firm to guide me in the months following the crash. There were times when I might have been defeated by the pain and depression of this “new normal.” I felt a loss of independence that caused me despair initially. Attorney EC Duckworth understood what I was dealing with. He and Legal Assistant Tiffany Wehmeyer often reached out to me to bring me news of progress in gathering facts and negotiations with various parties involved. They encouraged me to focus on moving forward with medical expertise and physical therapy and new technologies. They explained each step of the process in my my case. If there were delays, they followed up to maintain forward progress. If there were decisions to be made, they explained options and possible outcomes to me. It was the confidence they inspired that enabled me to make informed decisions and feel assured about outcomes. It wasn’t the biggest case anyone at A. W. Smith has handled, yet they managed necessary investigations and negotiations and consistently communicated with me as though it was their greatest priority. I was grateful. I would — I do recommend them to all my friends and loved ones who might need their talents, expertise and compassion. I’ve had to be realistic, to accept what I can’t change, but I have been able to take some steps toward establishing a new normal with dignity. My sincere thanks goes to all of the team, but especially to Tiffany and E.C.

I have been the recipient of an angry ex who has dragged me and our children thru the court "ringer" for over 2 years. I started with attorneys that touted many awards and years of experience. I wrongly associated high hourly rates with superior service. I couldn't have been more wrong. Frustrated with the family law system, I was going to go Pro se in family court to preserve any finances for an appeal that my ex had filed with the Western District. A quick manuever from the opposing side landed me with 4 motions to take place in one day, within 1 weeks notice, during a time that I had a pre-existing conflict. I contacted Elisha and explained my situation. She herself had very little time to prepare, but showed such compassion for me and my situation that she agreed to represent me. Wow! Words cannot explain how wonderful she has been. She demonstrated an excellent understanding of Missouri law. She told me what my options were with such limited notice and the inability to be present for that specific hearing. She then proceeded quickly to set me up for success. She filed the correct responses/motions within a couple of days. At the hearing, she genuinely spoke on my behalf expressing to the court everything that I wanted to say, but in superb legal lingo that I would not have been equipped with. Her phenomenal representation resulted in all of the motions going the way that I wanted. Impressively, Elisha also used her quick thinking and ability to grasp what was in my best interest; to handle a curve ball that the opposing team threw at the hearing (having not been discussed between us prior). I wish I had found Elisha years ago. I have no doubt that she would have prevented so much of the extra heartache and grief associated with my previous choice of outrageously priced attorneys who cared very little for me. I believe that my previous attorneys just saw me as a cash cow. Over two years too late, this lesson wasn't learned in time for me. But for anyone reading this, maybe it can help you. If you want someone who actually cares for you, respects your money, and fights on your behalf using incredible law knowledge- then I highly recommend Elisha Gilmore.

Excellent legal knowledge and very supportive not just legally but emotionally. Elisha has gone above and beyond during my fight against my vindictive soon to be ex wife. Providing excellent legal service to defend this exparte that is being used to keep my children from me. Even when the opposing lawyer was being difficult Elisha kept me in the loop and answered any questions I had promptly. Case is still ongoing but I am now getting time with my children and I owe it all to this law group. Friendly, professional and overall excellent! Highly recommend!

Chris enabled us to navigate a dispute with our HOA involving legal contracts and verbal agreements that bordered on abuse. Without getting into specific details, he saved us hundreds of dollars and the matter was dropped due to his deep understanding of the law. I'd recommend Chris; his services are top notch.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Columbia, Missouri?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
