Pros
1
Knowledgeable and experienced attorneys who fight aggressively for their clients
“Kelli is a great lawyer! I would highly recommend her and her Secretary was always nice and responded to all my questions as soon as possible. Going into trial I was really nervous but she was so on top of everything and so fierce. She really knows her stuff!”
2
Attorneys provide honest and realistic advice, even if it's not what the client wants to hear
“Kelli shot me straight told me just what I needed to hear. She is honest, affordable, tough. I recommend her anyone going through a tough process, she will get you through it.”
3
Attorneys are responsive and keep clients informed throughout the process
“Kelli and Rhonda were deeply invested in my numerous trips back to court with my ex. They stood beside me, never made promises that were unrealistic and never gave up fighting. The paperwork Rhonda sifted through during my last court battle was heroic! I will always be grateful to them.”
4
Attorneys are effective at getting favorable outcomes for their clients
“Kelli exceeded every expectation I had. I am naturally a worrier. Between all of my questions and concerns, Kelli was able to walk me through the whole thing and ease my mind. I have no doubt that I will be back in court again for a modification and I will use Kelli every single time.”
5
Attorneys are caring and put their clients' best interests first
“From our first meeting Kelli was ready to fight for me. I felt confident she would get the best for me and my daughters. She helped keep me calm and focused during a very difficult divorce.”
Cons
1
Lack of urgency and responsiveness from the law firm
“This place is awful. They screen phone calls and emails. They have no sense of urgency. They CONSTANTLY screw up the paperwork. I spend more time correcting all their mistakes that I feel like I should be paid to do the job. You have to stay on top of everything regarding to make sure the required documents are submitted on time. Good luck trying to show up to try to get them to talk to you because nobody is ever in the office.”
2
Attorneys may not fight as aggressively as expected or make poor strategic decisions
“If it had been the simple uncontested case that my friends who recommended her had experienced (that I hoped I might have), maybe she would have been okay. It quickly became obvious that was not the case. I paid her a $2500 retainer that she claimed would take care of everything. She filed my case, emailed back and forth with the snake that my wealthy soon-to-ex hired and had me come down four times on my maintenance offer while opposing counsel stonewalled. She told me not to try very hard to get a job until the divorce was final. She recommended I not even ask for child support in lieu of college expenses (which, I later learned from more qualified attorneys, is ridiculously poor advice given the income disparity that would ensure he paid for college anyway, and she severely low-balled the child support I would have given up under her counsel too!)”
3
Law firm may overcharge or engage in questionable billing practices
“I may or may not refute these ridiculous charges for work she never did, for such an inefficient job on a case that would've left me in dire straits if I had not gotten the great advice to seek new counsel to really fight for me. But I definitely will be thankful, even if it cost me $2500, that she is no longer my lawyer.”

Andre’ Boyda has represented over 50 of my patients over the last few years. Personal injury cases can be tough on patients mentally as well as physically. Dealing with insurance companies and adjusters pressuring them to settle can add to the stress for patients. When I’m treating a patient, I want them to focus on getting better so their physical injuries will heal as fast as possible. I don’t want them to worry about their case. My patients leave the worry to Andre’ and his team. Results matter. I’ve seen Boyda Law fight for the rights of my patients. Andre’s and his team keep everyone involved in the case updated with the most current information. My patients have always had a positive outcome and received their settlement in a timely manner. The dedicated team at Boyda Law takes great pride in their work and it shows through the satisfaction of our patients. I fully place my trust and confidence in Andre’ and his team.

I recently got a ticket for a red light cam. I got this ticket in the mail, contacted John and spoke to him personally - he got my ticket dismissed and I was very pleased. prices are reasonable and I would recommend this firm to anyone. Being a paralegal for over 13 yrs now I know what good service is when I get it. This office was very professional and communicated with me every step of the way.

I never had problems with the law before, but after an unfortunate pass on the highway I got a pretty bad speeding ticket. John Burnett was able to solve it. He is very responsive, helpful and he knows his stuff. If you get into a tight spot I strongly recommend talking with John. Thanks again for all your help!

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Independence, Missouri?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
