After a failed attempt with another Attorney we thankfully found Martha Brown! Her assistance, knowledge, understanding and subsequent work from her entire team was outstanding! At a terribly sensitive time, with my father gravely ill and my elderly mother not being comfortable with 25+ year old legal documents prepared by an estranged family members firm, Martha navigated a course that included several in person visits, emails and one on one meetings with trust companies. At no time did my mother or I feel as if we were being rushed, coerced or "processed" as just the next client on the books. The clear thorough advice and subsequent documents produced were provided with both speed and accuracy leaving mother at age 93 feeling safe and secure. With father passing in the midst of it all, they even helped process probate and were there to answer every question. Martha has a relatability that clearly puts elderly, and the not yet elderly, at ease. She's real people. She's honest. She understands the problem and provides a clear path to resolve. She and her entire team are there to help! We are extremely grateful to all Martha has done!

Martha Brown and her team were excellent! They met with my sons & I and walked us through the "legal speak" of any and all documents. They worked the Medicaid forms for us in a timely manner, all the while giving us the care and concern us older folks needed. When we called or emailed, there was a prompt reply! Highly recommended!

I referred my best friend & her brother to Martha for advice about a family matter. She understood the intricacies of the family dynamic and the impact that an elderly parent's mental health issues have on relationships. She could answer their questions based on years of experience, and gave meaningful guidance and reassurance -- all in one sitting. After consulting with Martha, my friends got a good night's sleep for the first time in weeks.

Martha Brown represented my family for sensitive legal matters that involved having my father declared incompetent to protect him from outside predators. Martha and her staff were extremely sensitive to how delicate of a situation it was and were always professional. Martha handled my family, including my father, with the same care and respect that she handled dealing with the judge assigned to our case. It was a pleasure working with Martha and I would highly recommend her to anyone with a legal issue in the Elder Care area of the law.

Martha and her staff helped greatly when my brother in law died unexpectedly and without a will or any other legal documents. His home and investments were required to go through the probate process in Missouri. He was not organized to say the least. I had to call Martha on a Sunday afternoon. She told me the 2 things I could and should do immediately. Throughout the next year and a half, Martha and her staff dealt with banks, mortgage and investment companies. In addition to my brother in law not being organized, some of the bank and mortgage companies weren't either. Martha filed all papers necessary with the court and let us know when court approved. Her advice led to an extra 100k in the estate settlement. If you are not aware, attorneys are not paid until the probate process is complete and settlement is approved by the court. I did not experience any problems with Martha Brown and her associates over the 18 months. I believe they more than earned their fee over this period of time. Since then I have called on Martha for various legal needs and will continue to do so.

ms. roberts established that i did want to contest anything. i was put through to her and asked her if she wanted to read my message from here, then talk on phone but she took about 20 mins and i was glad she was asking me questions. I did leave a fuller picture of my concern on the message than over phone. she left me at a good juncture, in which is she is willing to represent "the little guy," a beneficiary, understanding when it will be more effective to inform me of my position in the near future. She wasn't stuffy, not correcting me when i inadvertently used her first name. Thank you, Ms. Roberts

October 2015 I met Kate Justin approximately fifteen years ago while I was employed at Saint Louis University School of Law and she was a law student. I remember very well always being so impressed with her confidence, sense of commitment, intelligent, professionalism and her understanding of the law. She treated all with kindness and respect plus, she was fun and enjoyable to be with. I stayed in touch with her after graduation and continued to observe all the positive characteristics being practiced in her career. She obviously cared about her clients and was accessible to them. In February of 2014, a personal friend died unexpectedly and I realized I needed to have a will and final papers in order. Having worked at the law school, I knew many lawyers and did talk to a few about my situation but was having difficulty making a decision. I had forgotten that Kate practiced this area of law so when I happened to see her, I knew instantly she would do an excellent job for me, which she did. She not only knows the law well but understood my situation and tailored the documents to me. She was always prepared when we met and clear about exactly what she needed from me. She worked effectively and efficiently. The documents were drawn and completed in a very reasonable time frame. She kept her promise about when the work was to be completed. I highly recommend Kate Justin for your attorney. She will not only meet all criterions but will far exceed expectations.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Kirkwood, Missouri?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
