My case was a Modification and I was defending a status quo Judgment that had been set up via trial in another state in 2019. The Modification ended up extensive and contentious, but Jill remained ethical, competent, and compassionate throughout. Homeschooling and religious freedom were important and she was able to win on both. I am so grateful to her that she kept fighting and believing. I definitely recommend using her and her office (thanks especially to Audri and Bonnie!) for any family law needs.

I would highly recommend Jill and her firm. They worked with me through some really tough things and walked me through what I didnt even consider. Everyone there I have interacted with has truly been such a delight to work with through such a difficult time. They are all very knowledgeable and really do their best to help you in a time when everythings hard to manage.

Went to court 12SEP24 expecting to go to trial, but was able to settle. Got everything in the best interest of my son and would highly recommend to anyone in need of family legal counsel. Thank you all again!

Jill and her team are excellent in their timeliness and follow through, and are efficient and calm in the storm. Jill has excellent rapport with opposing counsel and the judge, is sensitive to the witnesses, and can be a strong and respectful advocate for her client in hearings.

I highly recommend Jill Worstell as a family law attorney. As an attorney myself, I happened to sit in on one of her trial days in a very contentious case with Judge Kanatzer. You could tell how much Mrs. Worstell cared about her client and her needs, to the detriment of her own physical wellbeing. I thought it was a very challenging case that would be difficult for her client. When I recently checked on casenet to see the status of the case, I was very impressed to see she had prevailed for her client. I focus on representing dads, but I wouldn’t hesitate recommending anyone with a family law matter to Jill Worstell. She is a very impressive attorney who deeply cares about her clients.

Todd and Kelli made my bankruptcy incredibly easy and stress free. All I had to do was hand them the information on debts and show up at a creditor's meeting (legally required) everything else was handled easily and quickly. I can't say I've ever had as great an experience with another attorney.

My husband and I met and consulted Matt to help with tax questions 2 1/2 years ago. He was so helpful we have come back every year. Anytime we have a question he is just an email away and responds quickly.

We hired Matt do work on our taxes for the past few years. An issue came up this past year that he assisted with getting resolved from the IRS. The issue was minor but inconvenient and simply annoying. Matt contacted and provided all the copies needed multiple times to the IRS. His professionalism and promptness was extremely appreciated. He would be the first person I would recommend. Thanks Matt!

Matt has provided invaluable legal services for my real estate business. First, he helped me win a lawsuit against a former tenant for damages, and then he successfully paved the way for garnishment of wages. In another case, he helped me to sue a former tenant for extensive damages and to reach a fair settlement out of court. More recently, he prepared the documents for my LLC, including an operating agreement. Matt does a great job of communicating with his clients, other attorneys and judges. His work is timely and professional, and his fees are reasonable.

Jonathan Lourenco is the very epitome of what a lawyer should be! When I went to him for the first time, I was very nervous, but he made the first visit not so scary! He was nonjudgmental and I felt that he actually cared about my case! He was always available and responded quickly via email or calls. His wealth of knowledge and understanding of my case was very reassuring to me. He was honest and to the point. The last year has been overwhelming for me, but he made a difference in my life and for that I will always be thankful for him! If you need a lawyer, he is the one you need to contact! He won't disappoint!!!

  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Lee's Summit, Missouri?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
