Got my case settled for FAR more than even the other lawyers I know ever thought was even possible!!! I was in a bad car accident in St. Charles County and was in a lot of pain for months afterwards. I happened to bump into this lawyer I know, Thomas SanFilippo and he immediately knew exactly what to do. I wish I would have called him sooner, right after the wreck! He and his team were great to work with and I was able to get excellent medical treatment (which they made sure the person who caused the accident’s insurance company paid for) Definitely 5 stars.

What can I possibly express in words about Holland Law Firm? Absolutely nothing, simply because in my honest opinion, the ONE person who I have been in contact throughout a years long class action lawsuit has been KETRA FRANCIS. Long ago when this lawsuit was in its infancy, it was KETRA FRANCIS in the beginning, middle, and end that made the process transparent, kept me informed, and also KETRA has and always was extremely professional and never left me with a question for more than 12 hours. KETRA FRANCIS and by extension Holland Law Firm did the absolute best job they could in what was clearly a dynamic, always shifting, and time consuming challenge that frankly KETRA FRANCIS was born to do. I’m prior service 11B 23 years retired. Honestly we would not have gotten a thing without KETRA’s commitment to serve the underserved Veterans in our community. Good on you KETRA FRANCIS. KEEP UP THE FIRE! Very Respectfully Tapia & Amanda Salter-Tapia

I hired Thomas to handle my case that came my way unexpectedly. Not only did he handled it all, perfectly, in a very short period of time, but he got me the best outcome possible. Highly recommend his services if you are someone that loves to win and win bigly. Wish I would have called him sooner!!! 10/10 Recommend.

JUSTICE SERVED! The Holland Law Firm has worked tirelessly over the last few years litigating a case on behalf of many veterans. We won and it’s because of the long hours, hard work, efforts, and the fight from this law firm. I personally can’t thank all the attorneys, paralegals (Ketra), staff, and all involved enough in working for me, my family, and all veterans!! Thank you. 🇺🇸

I was given Christine’s name by a family lawyer and I am so happy they referred me to her firm. I couldn’t ask for a more kind and professional team that truly cares about their clients than her. Anyone who is in charge of taking care of an aging parent should consult her.

Christine provided me with a service that is often overlooked - creating a trust. It is a lot of work but you walk out of Christine's office reassured that every detail was covered. Christine educates as she works with you. The topic is overwhelming but she truly knows her line of law. I have advised her services to friends and familes

I have known Brad for a few years now. He has handled both my personal legal business, and I've sent several referrals to him. I have had nothing but top notch service from him, and have confirmed repeatedly that my trust in him is well placed. The people I referred speak to the same, without exception.

I contacted Douglas through Avvo because I was rather tight on money, and wasn't 100% sure if I needed an attorney. After our 15 min call Biggs offered to continue to help me as much as possible. And I am extremely grateful. I was dealing with my first offense misdemeanor charge and wasn't sure how any of this was going to play out. Douglas Biggs was the most honest and helpful lawyer I had spoken with. He offered me invaluable advice and was in contact with me all the way up to my pretrial conference. If it wasn't for the advice and knowledge he bestowed on me, I wouldn't have come out of the courtroom with the outcome I did. I am forever grateful and would without a doubt recommend Biggs to anyone seeking help. He wants to help his clients, not just receive their checks. This meant everything to me. If you are looking to hire an attorney or just consult one, my first recommendation would be Douglas Biggs!

Honesty and integrity aren't two words that you use too often with lawyers, but Doug Biggs has both qualities. He handled my legal matter with great professionalism and effectiveness. I sent him a check for his services, but he did not receive it as expected. So I dropped off a second check. A few weeks later he received the original check due to a mix up with the postal service. He could have easily deposited the check, but instead he called to inform me that he finally received the original check. He shredded the check per my request. Thank you Mr. Biggs. Hopefully I don't need any legal help in the future, but if I do, I will be sure to contact you.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Saint Louis, Missouri?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
