This, is there anything very professional on the surface. After our consultation, we were happy to pay to retain her. Unfortunately, after many attempts to call her and email her, we'd never heard from her again. We even went as far as reporting her to the bar

Attorney Truitt is a ghost of an attorney. I hired her for a case and she neglected to show up for my court date and never reached out to communicate why she missed. She hired a third party answering service and you're not able to reach her directly. I've left several messages via email and phone and she has yet to return my calls.

This lady held a meeting at my church this Saturday, she was very, very disrespectful, telling us the members to shut up, said she was going to sue the church, if we didn’t pay her. First of all the church never hired her, was not voted on to hire her. The pastor took upon hisself to hire her, which he should be responsible for her payment. I understand lawyers are tough, but there is a difference between tough and being downright disrespectful. She also stated that we are not a congregational church, which is not true, since we are not a congregational church per her statement that means the Pastor is null and void, because the congregation voted.. She also brought up The Union in the church business, and the church is not union, what happen to the statement of separation between State and Church. She will not ever be recommended as a lawyer.

Shira Truitt was exceptional, and I would recommend her to everyone! She explained everything fully up front, was easy to email any questions, prompt with returning phone calls or information regarding my case, qualified in both Illinois and Missouri, and her demeanor was perfect for my case, a great balance of professionalism, understanding, and she definitely wasn’t like my last attorney I had to let go. She came into my case FIGHTING, made sure my marital agreements benefited me, ensured I was able to claim my kids since I was paying for healthcare, etc. I would highly recommend Shira to anyone and will use her again if needed.

I paid for our consiltation on a very easy case. She seened very professional and I was very excited to get her help. I sent her a check for my case and the documents she requested over 4 months ago and havent heard a single word since. I have called 8 times, made 2 appointments she didnt show up for. SO disappointed in such a high level of unprofessionalism. BEWARE!

I was given Christine’s name by a family lawyer and I am so happy they referred me to her firm. I couldn’t ask for a more kind and professional team that truly cares about their clients than her. Anyone who is in charge of taking care of an aging parent should consult her.

Christine provided me with a service that is often overlooked - creating a trust. It is a lot of work but you walk out of Christine's office reassured that every detail was covered. Christine educates as she works with you. The topic is overwhelming but she truly knows her line of law. I have advised her services to friends and familes

I hired Hallie for custody issues with my child who was in 2nd grade at the time. The issues turned out to be very in-depth and complicated. Hallie was always prepared at every turn. When we needed to bring professionals in, Hallie had excellent recommendations who were very good and well qualified. I had worked with several different attorneys in the past that were not able to do for my family what Hallie did. Separately, I also hired Hallie for a divorce. With Hallies help and guidance we were able to keep it an uncontested divorce and for my situation that has proved to work out very well. Now, my ex and I are able to coparent very effectively and our 2 young children are very happy and doing very well in their lives. I am very grateful for Hallie and all the work she has done for me and my family.

I contacted Douglas through Avvo because I was rather tight on money, and wasn't 100% sure if I needed an attorney. After our 15 min call Biggs offered to continue to help me as much as possible. And I am extremely grateful. I was dealing with my first offense misdemeanor charge and wasn't sure how any of this was going to play out. Douglas Biggs was the most honest and helpful lawyer I had spoken with. He offered me invaluable advice and was in contact with me all the way up to my pretrial conference. If it wasn't for the advice and knowledge he bestowed on me, I wouldn't have come out of the courtroom with the outcome I did. I am forever grateful and would without a doubt recommend Biggs to anyone seeking help. He wants to help his clients, not just receive their checks. This meant everything to me. If you are looking to hire an attorney or just consult one, my first recommendation would be Douglas Biggs!

Honesty and integrity aren't two words that you use too often with lawyers, but Doug Biggs has both qualities. He handled my legal matter with great professionalism and effectiveness. I sent him a check for his services, but he did not receive it as expected. So I dropped off a second check. A few weeks later he received the original check due to a mix up with the postal service. He could have easily deposited the check, but instead he called to inform me that he finally received the original check. He shredded the check per my request. Thank you Mr. Biggs. Hopefully I don't need any legal help in the future, but if I do, I will be sure to contact you.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Saint Louis, Missouri?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
