I have had reason to retain the legal services of Attorney Daniel B. Chartrand several times in the past thirty years. I have found Attorney Chartrand to be very professional and adept in his ability to maneuver in the many situations that arise in the legal system. Attorney Daniel Chartrand is one those very rare persons that think of others, instead of himself. With that said; Attorney Daniel Chartrand is an excellent attorney and a very fine person.

Dan Chartrand has been our attorney for about 25 years. He always has our best interest at heart. He is honest, and a person of integrity who won't make promises he can't keep. He will work in your best interest at all times without fail; he is your advocate. I have always been able to rely on Mr. Chartrand for a variety of legal issues, including estate planning. He is the only attorney I have ever met that I trust completely. I recommend Mr. Dan Chartrand for any legal advice, family law or estate planning.

Dan Chartrand is one of the best lawyers in St. Louis! He is personable, smart, knowledgeable, trustworthy and savy. We have been going to him for years. I'm still trying to get a copy of my trust; response has been slow and communication seems to have broken down. But, I'll keep contacting his office. He is simply the best.

I contacted Douglas through Avvo because I was rather tight on money, and wasn't 100% sure if I needed an attorney. After our 15 min call Biggs offered to continue to help me as much as possible. And I am extremely grateful. I was dealing with my first offense misdemeanor charge and wasn't sure how any of this was going to play out. Douglas Biggs was the most honest and helpful lawyer I had spoken with. He offered me invaluable advice and was in contact with me all the way up to my pretrial conference. If it wasn't for the advice and knowledge he bestowed on me, I wouldn't have come out of the courtroom with the outcome I did. I am forever grateful and would without a doubt recommend Biggs to anyone seeking help. He wants to help his clients, not just receive their checks. This meant everything to me. If you are looking to hire an attorney or just consult one, my first recommendation would be Douglas Biggs!

Honesty and integrity aren't two words that you use too often with lawyers, but Doug Biggs has both qualities. He handled my legal matter with great professionalism and effectiveness. I sent him a check for his services, but he did not receive it as expected. So I dropped off a second check. A few weeks later he received the original check due to a mix up with the postal service. He could have easily deposited the check, but instead he called to inform me that he finally received the original check. He shredded the check per my request. Thank you Mr. Biggs. Hopefully I don't need any legal help in the future, but if I do, I will be sure to contact you.

Everyone I came in contact with at the firm was professional and friendly. I was asked questions I had not thought of to make sure my trust was created the way I wanted it. I was also given instructions on how to fund the trust and encouraged to call the firm if I had any questions.

We were very satisfied with our entire experience. From the start of our first meeting to the end of the process we were treated like we were very important and that every question that we had was also very important. We never felt rushed and felt we were the firm's top priority. We would and will definitely refer this firm to our family and friends.

After attending a workshop given by Jackie Capriano, I knew she was the attorney I wanted to help me with my estate planning. I had no idea how to start, but Miss Jackie patiently guided me through the very detailed process. She offered excellent suggestions and explained fully whatever I did not understand. I am thankful for her knowledge, professionalism, and dedication to seeing that my requests are fulfilled. Kudos as well to her paralegal, Mary Wanner , who is equally knowledgeable and supportive. I am extremely pleased with the service with these two ladies have provided and would highly recommend Your Estate Matters, LLC, to anyone in need of proficient and experienced estate planning.

Chris Barclay has served as our family's attorney for nearly 30 years. Over the last 20 years as my personal attorney, Chris has provided outstanding estate planning and legal counsel for family and personal trusts, wills, ILITS, POAs. Prior to becoming my personal attorney, Chris served my grandfather in a similar capacity, however he was involved in a wider variety of contract, real estate, tax, and business law. Chris is a trusted and valued advisor to my family and I look forward to Chris continuing in this role on behalf of our children in the future. His consistency, dependability, availability, and quality of advice are just a few of the reasons why Chris will continue to serve as our legal counsel. I appreciate his conservative approach to estate and tax planning as I know that all of our legal documents and strategies will withstand legal tests and protect our interests for the long term. Chris is very disciplined in how he documents his effortization against our needs and I have found him to be affordable in terms of giving our family access to his extensive experience in areas that matters to us. One more point, because estate and tax laws are constantly changing, I appreciate how Chris works hard to stay on top of the laws, how to protect our interests, as well as differences by state. What gives me great confidence in his value is that we are not constantly changing our strategies and tactics based on the latest tax court rulings and the like which helps me sleep at night knowing that our wishes and intentions are well articulated in our legal documents. I strongly recommend Chris to anyone seeking a highly capable attorney that knows how to integrate your family's interests into legal documents that protect your wealth and execute your intentions in all matters relating to estate planning.

Chris has always been able to respond quickly to the issues requiring attention and my referrals have always resulted in a positive response from the client being referred. There is no better indication of my confidence in Chris than my continued willingness to refer business to him.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Saint Louis, Missouri?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
