We hired CJ to resolve major home inspection issues. CJ is knowledgeable, easy to contact, and a pleasure to deal with on a personal and professional level. He resolved the case almost exactly in the manner he predicted, and he and his office kept us informed throughout the process. Would highly recommend.

CJ provided much needed assistance to hold a building contractor accountable for a disastrous home construction problem. His efforts resulted in getting our earnest money refunded from a very reluctant adversary. He also counseled us against filing a lawsuit given time and money constraints. We appreciated that advice. Would not hesitate to seek his legal advice again if needed.

We hired C.J. to help us with seller disclosure and home inspection issues. He handled the case proactively and always kept us updated on the status of the case. C.J. is such a delightful person and top-of-his-field professional. If we ever needed help again, I would reach out to C.J. in a heartbeat.

I heard amazing things about C.J. when I was referred to him to help me out with an RV purchase that went south and while working through my case, he lived up to his outstanding reputation...exceeding my expectations! C.J. and his staff were extremely responsive and informative throughout the process, giving me 100% confidence that things were trending the right way. In the end, C.J. executed his plan with perfection and my case was quickly resolved in a diplomatic way, avoiding the courtroom. As his client, I was 100% satisfied and cannot think of one thing I wish he or his staff would have done differently...and this is coming from a guy who is normally never short in constructive feedback :).

Explained why the specific language in a Quit Claim Deed my family intended to use for transferring ownership to an LLC was incorrect and suggested using a basic Quit Claim Deed instead to avoid problems.

Great lawyer, good staff, Judges love and respect him. Won us $265,000 in judgments and we were the DEFENDANTS (who counter-sued the bad guys!). Have used him for real estate transactions, easements, etc.

My family homesteaded in Montana. We have been here for 7 generations. After retiring from Boeing, I returned to Montana where a group of who I can only call greenie anarchists threatened my life, vandalized my property and sued me multiple times. I hired a number of attorneys to represent me, including some big name types from Montana. Most of them only got my name right on my bill. We (barely) prevailed in the lawsuits filed against us, mostly because of my wife's attention to detail and her amazing memory. I told my wife shortly before we contacted Quentin that we were looking into the abyss. The greenies had forged documents allowing access to our property and after I confronted them with a shotgun had me arrested and charged with 6 felonies (240 years in prison). I have never been in trouble with the law. I held security clearances at the federal level and I was looking at prison for the rest of my life. We then hired Quentin as our previous attorney who told me I was a criminal had quit when I asked that Quentin come on-board. The charges "went away" as what I had done was LEGAL and Quentin pointed that out. The greenies then sued me and my wife. Quentin visited us, spent the night and by morning knew more about my case than I did. He had all the facts and had a response for all of the false accusations. We counter-sued and won over $250,000 in damages (what we asked for) as well as permanent restraining orders against those who sued us. I could not ask for a better attorney AND he is honest. I consider him a rarity in the legal profession, a good, honest, highly competent lawyer. If you are looking for one, look no further, this is the real thing!

I hired Quentin to pursue a claim a negligence claim against a home inspector. Quentin was dogged in pursuit of the inspector, who had left the state, and his insurance company. Through his efforts, I was able to make a full recovery. Quentin only charged me an hourly fee, which ended up costing me much less than a 1/3 or forty percent contingency fee of most other lawyers. I highly recommend Quentin.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Missoula, Montana?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
