I've been a lawyer for 20 years in Denver. I hired Pat Heng to handle a legal issue. He's very likable over the phone, and he got the result we wanted, but (in my opinion and experience) incredibly rude and lazy about keeping in touch and returning texts and phone calls.

Wow!!!!! What a JOKE! Tried hiring for services. Was even paying ahead before any services were requested. Once the accountant lady couldn’t figure out how to debt my account each month I decided to go with a lawyer where his office lady’s wouldn’t affect what was going on in the court! After I fired them! Judy, or mrs Wood, intentionally would debt my account after I fired them. She did it several times. Over several months. When I called and spoke to her about it she would acknowledge it, laugh and curse at me. She said she would refund me my 400$ , and even said she sent me a check. When In reality she didn’t. And as of this month! She is still charging me! As of Mr. Heng.........he was great! I had to get my banks security claims team involved, and even spoke to law enforcement. If u hire this service! Do not speak to Mrs Woods. She is the accountant! And she is evil!

Professional, and won my case, but can't ever get him to call me back. His secretary's have to take my name and number EVERY SINGLE TIME I call, they don't have a system where they save that information, which seems so backwards to me. I have called him at least 10 times and have received one call back from him, after hours, where he didn't leave any of the information I needed in the voicemail, only to please call him back, which I did to no answer.

I was injured on the job and very afraid. I consulted with Jay and he patiently explained everything I needed to know. He and his paralegal Kodi treated me with respect and compassion, keeping me informed and fighting for me every step along the way. My phone calls were always answered immediately. I cannot speak highly enough about my experience with them. Jay and Kodi took the stress out of a very stressful situation. I was blessed to have them on my side.

In 2017, I was injured in an automobile accident and suffered injuries. I contacted Jay to represent me and will forever be grateful that I did. Jay was professional in every encounter I had with him. He took interest in me as a person and showed concern for my health and wellbeing. He was professional and knowledgeable. I would highly recommend Jay Elliott and the Elliott Law Office if you need representation.

I could not be happier with my decision to have Chawnta represent me! I hired Chawnta for an uncontested divorce case with 2 minor children involved. She made sure that my ex and I both knew, I was being represented, but gave me the decision on how we wanted to handle our situation. She informed him if she ever felt he needed representation, she would tell him. She was honest, thorough, and diligent throughout the process. Chawnta went through every single scenario, situations that we had never even thought of, and gave us advice, and was extremely honest on when it would benefit one party or the other. Her staff, Sam, was extremely quick to respond through messaging, and I would get a phone call or message less than an hour later from her which I know can usually take days or weeks for other lawyers. She made the entire process go smoothly and kept me informed every step of the way on what would happen next. Everything she told me would happen, happened exactly as she said it would. The day we filed, we then waited the initial 60 day period before we could submit documentation. On day 61, she had the paperwork ready to go. She got it sent over to me, and we signed the next day in their office. She got it through the court system, no appearance in court, and the decree was signed by the judge two days later. A total waiting period of 65 days from when we filed. (INCREDIBLE!!!!) Beyond being a highly knowledgeable lawyer and an extremely diligent lawyer, Chawnta puts the interest in her clients that put you at ease knowing that your case will be handled fully, professionally, and right the first time. In an already extremely vulnerable time, you want to have a person like Chawnta, and her team in your corner. It made me feel so much more at ease and they were always readily available to answer any questions I had. If you need representation, use Chawnta. She is a gem in the community. Best decision I have ever made, and we are able to move on in the best way for our kids because of her. Thank you so much!

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of North Platte, Nebraska?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
