Pros
1
Effective communication and negotiation skills that can help reach favorable settlements without going to court
“Adam was able to meet with both my ex-to-be and I at one point to assure my ex that it was not his nor my intent to propose anything unfair, he reviewed the facts and laws with her, and earned her trust enough that we quickly agreed to settlement and custody terms without a mediator or court appearance.”
2
Thorough understanding of the law and ability to provide clear legal advice
“Through referring counsel Adam had already been briefed on my case and within minutes of our initial conversation I was able to sense his understanding of not only the law but how it related and applied to the unusual nature of my particular case.”
3
Diligent and effective litigation skills in the courtroom
“Adam is very confident, thorough, well prepared and comfortable in his grasp of the law. These great attributes became obvious in the courtroom where Adam is an extremely effective litigator.”
Cons
1
Lack of communication and responsiveness to client inquiries
“I have used many attorney's throughout my life, and I have never received or seen such poor communication by an attorney! He ignored emails and phone calls (from me) for months at a time.”
2
Failure to provide comprehensive legal advice and explore all options
“I am now having to take my ex-husband back to court for a new settlement because the one that Mr. Astley bartered for me was, as far as I am concerned, awful. I personally have never had such a terrible experience and outcome with someone in a professional line of work in my life.”
3
Inability to properly advise and represent the interests of out-of-state and military clients
“Communication with him was delayed and he would not adjust to the 8-9 hour time difference I had. Email communication was not acceptable to him despite the time difference. 2 years after the fact I am learning where he failed to properly advise (parenting time for me as an out of state military guy for start).”

I hired Mr. Astley to be my Divorce Atty. I did not get half of the bank accounts. I did not get half of the dodge vipers. I did not get half of the class a Monaco diplomat Camper. I did not get half of anything. I was a stay at home mom for 25 years. I ended up with five years of a pittance of alimony. I gave one star because you can’t give anything less. This was by far the worst experience of my life.

I am a previous and VERY unsatisfied client of Mr. Adam Astley. I hired Mr. Astley to help me with my divorce. Although Mr. Astley seemed to be quite intelligent and had accolades to his name, I do not feel that he used his knowledge to benefit me or my court case. Beyond this, I rarely received return phone calls unless the call was regarding paying his bill. I felt that there were several very important things that should have definitely been explained to me, that were not. I also wasn't informed about many, better options that I had available until AFTER the decree was signed, and at that point, it was too late. I have spoken with several other attorneys and every single one of them, bar none, has been shocked at how unfair and terrible the settlement that I received was. In fact, I am now having to take my ex-husband back to court for a new settlement because the one that Mr. Astley bartered for me was, as far as I am concerned, awful. I personally have never had such a terrible experience and outcome with someone in a professional line of work in my life. Please, I implore you, save yourself time, money and disappointment and find a different attorney. I only wish that I had checked Mr. Astley's reviews prior to hiring him.

Adam was my attorney and I received a terrible settlement directly as a result of his terrible legal advice. I am having to go back to court AGAIN to refight the same case. Not only was he not upfront with me, he kept charging more & more money with no evidence of billed hours he supposedly worked on my case. He accepted all of the requests of the other party and did noting that I could see to stand up for me and my case. Worst attorney I’ve ever used and I’ve had several. Save your money, I wouldn’t send my worst enemy to Adam Astley.

I have used many attorney's throughout my life, and I have never received or seen such poor communication by an attorney! He ignored emails and phone calls (from me) for months at a time. I later found out that he also ignored proposals, phone calls, and emails from opposing council for weeks and months at a time. His incompetence, horrible service, lack of communication, and complete unprofessionalism cost me precious time and thousands of dollars. Additionally, I paid his retainer and only received one invoice stating his billable hours over the course of more than a year. DO NOT hire Adam as an attorney!

After interviewing several Omaha-area attorneys for who would be the best fit to represented me in my divorce, I selected Adam based on his knowledge, demeanor, and experience. I was not just dissolving a marriage, but also trying to arrange for what was best for my two young children as well, so I wanted to make sure I selected the best attorney possible. Adam exceeded my expectations. What was perhaps most impressive to me was that Adam was able to meet with both my ex-to-be and I at one point to assure my ex that it was not his nor my intent to propose anything unfair, he reviewed the facts and laws with her, and earned her trust enough that we quickly agreed to settlement and custody terms without a mediator or court appearance. Being able to achieve that highly desirable result while legally representing only my interests (and my kids') speaks volumes to me about Adams talents. I have recommended Adam to two close friends of mine and will continue to recommend him to those in need of family law services.

I consulted with Jeff about an estate plan and he gave me and my wife great advise. I was very happy with the service that he provided and the fees (flat fee) was VERY reasonable. We had shopped around before deciding on Jeff. He came highly recommended from some good friends of ours. He is an amiable guy who seems to genuinely care about his clients. He spent a good about of time with us and we didn't feel rushed. His staff is very friendly too.

I CONTACTED MR. HALLER AFTER WORKING WITH TWO PROMINENT ATTORNEYS WHO STARTED BUT THEN DROPPED MY DAUGHTER'S DISABILITY CASE. I WAS LEFT IN A BIND WITH A HEARING BEING SCHEDULED AND NO ATTORNEY TO ASSIST WITH HER CASE. MR. HALLER TOOK MY DAUGHTER'S CASE EVEN THOUGH IT WOULD BE A BIT OF A STRUGGLE DUE TO UNDIAGNOSED CONDITIONS BY THE MEDICAL FIELD. HE WAS DILIGENT IN WORKING ON HER CASE, ALWAYS RESPECTFUL TO US, AND SHOWED CARING THROUGHOUT THE PROCEEDING. HE ALWAYS KEPT ME INFORMED OF WHAT WAS OCCURRING, AND FOLLOWED UP WITH EMAILS, PHONE CALLS, AND WRITTEN CORRESPONDENCE. I HAD REPRESENTATION PREVIOUSLY WHERE I WAS DOING A MAJORITY OF THE LEG WORK AND RESEARCH FOR THE CASE AND I HAD NO UPDATES, OR INFORMATION FROM THE ATTORNEY I HAD HIRED, SO MR. HALLER'S PROFESSIONALISM WAS A WELCOME BLESSING. WE HAD A POSITIVE OUTCOME ON THE CASE, AND MR. HALLER'S COMMITMENT TO HELPING US WAS A HIGH CONTRIBUTING FACTOR. I WOULD CONTACT HIM FIRST IN THE FUTURE FOR ANY OTHER LEGAL NEEDS WE MAY HAVE.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Omaha, Nebraska?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
