Michael Rowe did an update to our living trust and was very thorough and detailed in his work. I appreciate the fact that he did not rewrite the whole trust (as was suggested by another attorney), rather just produced an adendum at considerable cost savings. I have also had interactions with Mr. Hales and find he is of strong character and integrity in his dealings. This is a good law firm that serves its clients with professionalism. They are well-respected in the courts. I recommend them without reservation.

Gene represented me awesomely against SallieMae over my guarantor issue on my son's student loan. We arbitrated for me like a BOSS and we cross-examined the SallieMae rep like he was a sponsored pro football player! When it was done, SallieMae grudgingly released me from the co-signer guaranty on one of the student loans - we also found out thru Gene's relentless cross-examination that there were in fact two loans instead of one. Next, I am going to sic Gene "Pit Bull" Kaufmann on Sallie Mae so they release me from loan no. 2. But I am binding my time and first plan to engage Gene to sue a major Las Vegas resort, for falsely imprisoning my son and then extorting credit card payment from me to get him released, all because his bathtub overflowed! Gene is the man! And he is as honest and truthful as east is from west!

Natalia handled everything regarding probate after our father's passing in the most professional, helpful and empathetic manner that we could have hoped for in such a difficult process. She was able to hold his creditors to account, and ultimately saved us money by giving us the right advice and doing everything correctly the first time. If you are having to go through a similar situation, I highly recommend her services.

“In 2019 I was seriously injured in a car accident where I was rear ended in Carson City by a commercial truck. And the other driver’s insurance company did not call us back. So, I hired Sullivan Law to help. Wow, did they! The insurance company for the truck kept delaying and stalling and making excuses until we had enough of their games and Mr. Sullivan took them to court. In the fall of 2022, I felt like I was almost over the first accident when I suffered a second rear end collision - again in Carson City! It was so emotionally upsetting and painful. We engaged Sullivan Law to help again. Sullivan Law persevered and enlisted the help of Bradley Drendel & Jeanney in Reno for both cases. The insurance company on the 2019 case continued to stall. The 2019 case got set for trial in 2023 and with that pressure on, Joe Bradley and J. D. Sullivan and their great staffs worked hard together and got the 2019 case settled for me at the second mediation. Lisa and Amanda were great. What a relief! Even then, the insurance company delayed sending the settlement check, as agreed, and my attorneys had to threaten to get a court order forcing payment. Finally, after added delay, the insurance paid. And then, in late summer of 2023, we settled the 2022 case for the full insurance policy limits. Sullivan Law fought these legal battles for me every step of the way, even bringing in reinforcements with Bradley Drendel & Jeanney. And the attorneys were able to get a steep discount of my medical bills which really helped settle these two complex and intertwined cases. Such a stressful 4 years but things finally came to a closure. Thank you Sullivan Law and Bradley Drendel & Jeanney - you are awesome, and really helped me keep perspective when it seemed like my world was crumbling. I finally feel like I have my life back again! Jacqui K.”

When I came to JD I was distraught, I had almost $40,000 in medical bills for an accident that an insurance company said was my fault and didn't know what to do. JD and his team worked tirelessly to not only get my medical bills reduced, but also helped me sue the insurance company to reach a favorable settlement amount. I went from being in debt and scared of how I would be able to survive, to actually receiving money. I can't put into words how happy I am that I found JD and his team, they represent the very best of their field and I would strongly recommend them to anyone needing legal help. Thank you JD.

Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Minden, Nevada?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
