Spent 1- week going through a process of conflict checking. Once determined there was no conflict, they spent 2 hours of time with me asking me for information and e-mail to present to their high end lawyers. Another 1-1/2 weeks goes by and I'm finally told to busy with other cases to help. While Michelle was nice, I feel they just waste your time to see if you got a easy case they can win. Go to others who have more care for a clients interest. They just string you along. Should have looked at the 3.8 starts before talking with them. Not a good rating to start.

I am writing to wholeheartedly recommend Heather Burns, Lauren Simon Irwin, and Brooke Lovett Shilo at Upton and Hatfield, LLP as exceptional legal professionals. This team has been my legal counsel for the last 3 years, and from the first day they have consistently exhibited exemplary skills, dedication, and expertise in the area of employment law. The firm takes a team-based approach with each member having a deep understanding of the broad aspects of employment law. Additionally, each member of the team possesses a remarkable understanding of specific subject areas. Heather’s ability to grasp complex legal issues swiftly and communicate them effectively in a way that demonstrated their care for my personal situation was very comforting. The team continually exhibited a profound understanding of the intricacies of my case and provided invaluable guidance every step of the way. Their attention to detail, strategic thinking, and commitment to achieving the best possible outcome for me was truly impressive. In addition to their legal prowess, Heather, Lauren, and Brooke consistently exhibited professionalism, integrity, and a genuine concern for my well-being. The team always gave guidance that was in my best interest not necessarily the firms. They maintained open lines of communication, with the proper sense of urgency keeping me informed and involved in the decision-making process, which was immensely reassuring during what could have been a stressful time. The team did a fantastic job of preparing me for my deposition and settlement mediation. They were patient, understanding, and very thorough, which ensured that I was never surprised, left feeling uncomfortable, or unprepared. During multiple engagements with Judges and other court officials, I was very impressed with the respect the court has for Upton and Hatfield, LLP. On multiple occasions the court told me I chose wisely as I had the best firm in the state for my employment issues. I wholeheartedly endorse Upton and Hatfield, LLP for anyone seeking legal representation. They are not just a competent team, but also an amazingly compassionate team of advocates who work tirelessly in the best interest of their clients. Sincerely, Lynn M. Kramer

“For the first time in my 60 years, I finally experienced what it is like to have legal representation that I absolutely knew and felt were unequivocally advocating in my best interest! From our initial consultation on a difficult worker’s comp case, to a successful resolution that spanned several years, Attorney Grauel and his outstanding paralegal Diane were in my corner every step of the way. They fully explained the laws that govern workers comp in NH, and how those laws would and did apply to my case. The calm guidance and advice without all the over-hype allowed me to make informed decisions without feeling pressured. In addition to getting my workers comp case settled, Doug and Diane also took an active role while assisting me to clear all the hurdles required to secure and receive Social Security disability benefits, an effort for which I cannot thank them enough!” I you have a worker’s comp case you absolutely need to be represented, and I highly recommend the Grauel Law Office! Sincerely, Dave

I hurt my knee on the job in 2016. The workers comp insurance company agreed that the knee was injured on the job and paid for PT and a meniscus operation. I was still in pain after the operation and insisted on another MRI. It was determined that I would need a total knee replacement operation. The insurance company told me "you don't need a lawyer" , then their lawyer sent me a notice that I needed to go to an Independent Medical Examination. That's when I found Doug on the internet. Long story less long, he took my case and won unanimous decisions with four mediators at two different hearings at the Department of Labor. I got my knee replaced after 2+ years from the initial accident and Doug was amazing. Highly recommend his services. I would not have prevailed without him.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Concord, New Hampshire?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
