My husband and I have worked with Emma Hilton for almost 20 years first with real estate deals then with setting up our wills and estate planning and finally with our tax preparation. Every aspect of our dealings with Emma we have left feeling like she gave us true and honest direction and answers. Through out the years whenever something has come up she has been the first one I’ll reach out to in order to run a scenario or situation by her and every time she has promptly returned my email or my call. If she doesn’t know the answer she will tell us that and will then proceed to research until she finds the answer. While we may not always like the answer I truly feel she is looking out for our best interests. I have not hesitated to refer Emma to any of our family or friends as I know she will do the same for them. I feel we truly have a great partnership with her with whatever real estate or estate planning scenarios we have at the time. I highly recommend Emma Hilton Law for anyone that is looking for the answer to any estate or tax questions you may have (even if you don’t like what that answer is)!

Emma has been a key trusted advisor to me from both a personal and business perspective for over a decade. If I could rate her more than 5 stars, I would. Emma takes time to understand the person / family / business behind the numbers, their unique goals, challenges, and personalities while creating simplicity and actionable plans out of the most complex of situations that would be overwhelming without her guidance. In short, Emma is the best trusted advisor that I could imagine within her areas of expertise.

Emma is such a helpful resource - and a delight to meet with as well! She is very knowledgeable and efficient. I am so grateful for her help in my estate planning - I'm not sure I would have gotten it all finished without her!

Emma has been our Estate Atty as well as our Tax preparer since 2012. Professional in every way, sensitive to our needs, responsive when communicating via email or phone and with her experience and wealth of knowledge, it's easy to put our planning needs in her hands. She provides guidance and professional opinions in easy-to-understand terms and with her great sense of humor and personality, can put us at ease when needed. I am very comfortable in recommending Emma Hilton for Estate Planning and Tax preparation needs to not only friends and family but also business acquaintances…she provides an awesome tool to my financial toolchest. My family and extended family have engaged Greg Martin on several occasions for all of our family law needs. I recommend Greg to all of my family and friends on a regular basis. That is mainly because, Greg is a professional and has wonderful people skills. We have hired Greg during times when we feel most vulnerable and emotional. Greg always finds a way to calm our nerves and to make us feel confident in the process and his expertise to help us find a resolution. And, Greg has never failed us. I recommend Greg to you when you need a smart and sharp professional but also want to feel like you are really heard and cared for within the law.

I've know Greg for 20 years or so. First as a fellow volunteer for a local crisis center then as an attorney helping me in my business as a real estate broker. I've found he deals fairly and is knows his stuff. I mention his name often when I know someone needs the service he provides.

I am totally impressed by Cathy's command of the Divorce process. She completely outperformed my ex-wife's attorney, who charged multiples of what Cathy charged. Cathy's counsel helped me work through all the issues and helped me separate the important ones from those that were less important. Cathy was available for meetings and phone calls when I needed them. I recommend her without hesitation.

Catherine McKay represented me during my extremely contentious divorce. My former husband hid assets, tried to dodge child support, alimony, college payments -etc. Throughout the entire process Cathy was superb- a calm, fair but super smart voice of reason in a highly volatile situation. Thanks to Cathy my children and I ultimately triumphed in the NH court system - holding an extremely devious and dishonest individual accountable in a calm and legal fashion. Many years later I still rely on Cathy whenever I need fair, honest, reasonable legal advice. I have referred numerous friends and colleagues to Catherine McKay and every one of them have thanked me for the referral.

I was charged with transporting alcohol, transportation of controlled drug and possession of controlled drug. This was a big problem as I planned to go to school and a criminal charge would have hurt my career. I was trying to help a friend who was too drunk to drive. Alcohol and drugs belonged to friend. Attorney Tighe was able to convince the prosecutor to drop drug charges. I ended up with a relatively violation level alcohol charge with no criminal record . Attorney Tighe was most professional and competent a great NH lawyer.

I was being charged with felony possession of a drug which could have seriously affected my college financial aid. If convicted I was also looking at possible jail time. So I went online and found Attorney Kevin Tighe. Since a criminal charge is something that I am unfamiliar with I wasn't too sure what questions to ask and what to do next. Attorney Tighe was great, he even loaned me a suit jacket for my court appearance. He explained beforehand everything that would happen and what my choices would be. He was always good about returning my calls and very professional. In the end I ended up facing no jail time and Mr Tighe even worked out some payment terms for the small fine that I received. I would recommend him 110% to anyone needing a lawyer who is honest, incredibly supportive, and highly competent.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Londonderry, New Hampshire?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
